The Sydney Fish Market (SFM) in Glebe is the southern hemisphere’s largest fish market, one of Australia’s most visited attractions, and the beating heart of the nation’s seafood industry. A-once-in-a-generation precinct that redefines retail, dining, and visitor experience on Sydney’s waterfront.
Sydney Seafood School (SSS), located at the new Sydney Fish Market, is Australia’s leading seafood cooking school. We hold regular cooking classes for the public, for private groups and wonderful private catered events in our space overlooking Blackwattle Bay.
We are looking for enthusiastic, energetic and experienced Assistants to join our team in delivering world-class cooking classes in our stunning new space, in classes that range from Singapore Chilli Mud Crab to Italian Seafood Feast to Fillet a Fish to The Raw and the Cured, as well as assisting with classes delivered by our guest chefs and presenters and with some private catered events.
Employed on a casual basis, our Assistants are a valued and tight-knit team and collectively the DNA of Sydney Seafood School. They all have a deep passion for food, cooking and hospitality, and in every class they share their culinary knowledge, technical skills and seafood expertise with guests who are keen to learn.
Duties and Responsibilities
Culinary Demonstration Assistance & Guest Engagement
Preparation and set up for classes
Logistical analysis and operational planning of unique Guest Presenter classes
Culinary Operations, Ordering & Food Safety
Assist with kitchen operations, food procurement and inventory to support classes and events while maintaining food safety and cost control.
Kitchen Operations, WHS & Compliance
Maintain a safe, clean and well-functioning kitchen environment in line with WHS and organisational standards.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
8-10 years in a similar or complimentary role
Seafood knowledge and a willingness to learn more.
Technical skills, including knife skills.
Food knowledge – storing, preparing, hygiene/food safety, kitchen safety, kitchen equipment, presentation.
Articulate and well-spoken with an engaging presentation manner. Excellent communication and customer service skills.
Ability to problem solve, stay calm and work well under pressure.
Organisational skills including time management, multitasking and priorities.
Language, literacy & numeracy skills (HSC-equivalent).
RSA, Working with Children and First Aid certification (SFM will assist in facilitating this training if required).
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
Availability for both midweek and weekend shifts.
Australian Working Rights.
