Team Leader - Solutions Engineering

SSI SCHAEFER is looking for a Team Leader - Solutions Engineering to lead, develop and support our Application Engineering team across Australia and New Zealand.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced technical professional who wants to combine people leadership with hands-on technical involvement. You’ll lead a team working across a growing pipeline of warehouse automation opportunities, providing technical leadership and direction, helping manage priorities and building the capability of the team as our business grows.

Just as importantly, you’ll create an environment where solutions/systems consultants and application engineers are supported to take genuine ownership of their work. You’ll work closely with Sales, Project Delivery and specialist teams across SSI SCHAEFER in Australia and internationally to help develop solutions that are practical, technically sound and commercially competitive.

The role can be based in Sydney or Melbourne.

What you'll do

You’ll combine people leadership with strong technical involvement, helping the team develop great solutions while building the capability we need as the ANZ business grows.

• Lead, coach and develop our Solutions / Systems Consultants and Application Engineers, creating a team environment built around collaboration, accountability and technical excellence.

• Stay actively involved across our automation opportunities, providing technical guidance, reviewing concepts and costings, challenging assumptions and bringing senior input where it adds value.

• Balance priorities and resources across multiple opportunities, helping the team focus its effort where it matters most.

• Work alongside Sales and our technical specialists to understand customer requirements and help shape solutions that are practical, technically sound and commercially competitive.

• Support your team to take genuine ownership of their opportunities, while being there to help navigate complex technical, commercial or cross-functional challenges.

• Bring senior technical expertise into customer meetings, presentations and solution reviews when needed, while giving your team the opportunity to lead the detailed technical conversations.

• Work closely with Project Delivery, Software and our international Product Centres to bring the right expertise into our solutions and ensure what we propose can be successfully delivered.

• Keep improving how the team works - sharing knowledge, strengthening tools and methodologies, and using lessons from delivered projects to make future solutions even better.

About you

You’re an experienced technical professional who enjoys solving complex problems, developing people and helping others do their best work. You don’t need to have spent years in a formal management role, but you’ll have demonstrated that you can provide direction, coach others and bring people together around a common outcome.

You’ll bring:

• Strong technical experience in solutions engineering, application engineering, automation or a related environment.

• Experience leading, coordinating or mentoring technical professionals, with a genuine interest in developing people and building team capability.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the confidence to challenge assumptions and provide direction when technical or commercial issues become complex.

• The ability to understand and review solution concepts, engineering drawings, system layouts and costings, with a good appreciation of the commercial implications of technical decisions.

• Strong communication skills and the ability to make complex technical concepts understandable to customers, sales teams and other non-technical stakeholders.

• Sound commercial judgement, including an understanding of cost drivers, risk, value and the trade-offs involved in developing competitive solutions.

• The confidence to make decisions, manage competing priorities and work collaboratively across Sales, Engineering, Project Delivery and other specialist teams.

• A curious mindset and an interest in emerging technologies and better ways of solving customer problems.

A tertiary qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering or a related applied science discipline, or equivalent industry experience, is required. A relevant mechanical or electrical trade qualification combined with demonstrated experience in automated logistics solutions will also be considered.
