About the role
The Opportunity
Join the AIR6500 program and help shape the architecture of one of Australia's most advanced Defence capabilities. As a Systems Architect, you will provide technical leadership across a complex, integrated System-of-Systems environment that connects sensors, command and control systems, and battle management capabilities across multiple domains.
Working closely with Systems Engineering, Design Partners, SMEs and Defence stakeholders, you will be responsible for defining and maintaining the architectural foundation of the AIR6500 solution. This role offers the opportunity to influence key design decisions, guide technical direction, and contribute to a capability that will support Australia's future defence operations.
AIR6500 is the RAAF’s $3 billion program to develop a joint air battle management system that builds on the capabilities offered by Next Generation sensor and command and control systems. AIR6500 will create a fully networked ‘system of systems’ that synchronises air and missile defence operations in joint and coalition environments, maximising situational awareness and enhancing the speed of decision making across the battlespace.
Key Responsibilities
The Systems Architect's primary responsibilities include:
Lead requirements analysis, functional analysis and architectural development activities across the AIR6500 System-of-Systems
Develop and maintain functional, allocated and product baselines using MBSE principles, tools and frameworks
Provide architectural oversight for system interfaces, requirements traceability, Technical Performance Measures (TPMs) and derived engineering artefacts
Lead trade studies, technical assessments and risk management activities to support informed design decisions
Define product-level specifications, Statements of Work and architectural design patterns to support supplier engagement and delivery
Collaborate with engineering teams, SMEs and industry partners to support design reviews, integration activities and program outcomes
What you’ll bring
To be successful in this role you will have:
Extensive experience across the full systems engineering lifecycle, including requirements analysis, design, integration, test and support of complex Defence or large-scale system-of-systems programs
Strong expertise in Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), including development and interpretation of SysML models, diagrams and architectural viewpoints
Experience using contemporary requirements management tools and digital engineering environments
Strong analytical and technical leadership skills, with experience leading trade studies, risk assessments and architectural decision-making
Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with the ability to influence outcomes across multidisciplinary teams
Defence domain knowledge within Integrated Air and Missile Defence (IAMD), Integrated Fire Control Networks, Distributed C2 or related capabilities will be highly regarded
Eligibility for, or ability to obtain, an Australian NV‑1 security clearance
Proficient in AI prompting as it applies to this position and practice
