About the teamOur Technology team is the backbone of the business, building and maintaining the information technology infrastructure that support Coles Group. As a part of the Technology team, you get the opportunity to work through complex, challenging, meaningful problems using large data sets and new technologies to expand your skills and experience.
The Monitoring and Observability team enables Coles teams to understand the health, performance and customer impact of critical business services. We connect telemetry across customer journeys, applications, integrations, cloud platforms and infrastructure, helping engineering and operational teams detect issues earlier, troubleshoot faster and make better-informed decisions.
About the roleWe are seeking a hands-on Senior Systems Engineer to help design, implement and operate enterprise monitoring and observability capabilities. You will connect technical telemetry with business processes and operational outcomes, creating clear end-to-end views of service health and customer experience.
Key responsibilities include:
• Design and implement scalable monitoring and observability solutions across business and technology services.
• Develop end-to-end service views that connect business processes, customer journeys and operational KPIs with supporting applications, integrations and infrastructure.
• Implement Real User Monitoring to capture and analyse end-user experience and browser performance.
• Lead the adoption of OpenTelemetry, including Collector pipelines, instrumentation patterns and telemetry standards for metrics, traces and logs.
• Configure and support Splunk Observability Cloud capabilities, including APM, Infrastructure Monitoring, dashboards, detectors, alerts and service-level objectives.
• Develop Splunk Cloud and ITSI solutions, including searches, services, entities, KPIs, dashboards and service health views.
• Build actionable alerting, synthetic monitoring and diagnostic capabilities that improve incident detection, troubleshooting and root-cause analysis.
• Automate observability infrastructure and configuration using Terraform and CI/CD pipelines, integrating with Microsoft Azure and other enterprise platforms.
• Create technical standards, documentation and reusable onboarding patterns, while providing technical leadership to engineering and operational teams.
You are an experienced systems, platform, DevOps, SRE or observability engineer who can work across business, application, infrastructure, cloud and operational teams. You combine strong technical depth with practical stakeholder communication and a focus on measurable service outcomes.
To be successful, you will bring:
• Senior-level experience in systems, platform, DevOps, SRE or observability engineering.
• Strong hands-on experience with OpenTelemetry, including the OpenTelemetry Collector, distributed tracing, metrics, logs, telemetry correlation and application instrumentation.
• Experience designing dashboards and service health views that connect technology performance with business and customer outcomes.
• Strong Microsoft Azure engineering experience, together with Terraform and CI/CD tools such as Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions or equivalent.
• Strong scripting capability using Python, PowerShell, Bash or similar, plus proficiency in Linux and Windows command-line environments.
• Strong troubleshooting, analytical and communication skills, with the ability to influence across technical and non-technical stakeholder groups.
Experience with Splunk Observability Cloud, Splunk Cloud Platform, SPL, Splunk ITSI, Kubernetes or Azure Kubernetes Service, Ansible, UiPath, SRE practices, telemetry governance or AI agent monitoring will be highly regarded.
Success in this role will mean Coles teams have clear end-to-end visibility of critical services and customer journeys, observability onboarding is automated and repeatable, alerts are actionable, and the platform remains reliable, secure, scalable and cost effective.
If you are passionate about turning complex telemetry into meaningful operational and customer insights, we would love to hear from you.
