Senior Legal Officer - Environment and Strategic Advice

• Senior Legal Officer - Environment and Strategic Advice 
• One temporary full-time role, 35 hrs/week for a period up to November 2027 (parental leave cover) 
• Office based in Parramatta (flexible working offered) - other established work locations deemed suitable across NSW may be considered
• Salary relative to experience ranging from $142,695 to $152,731 + superannuation & annual leave loading

We are looking for one Senior Legal Officer to join the Environment and Strategic Advice legal team at DCCEEW.  The successful candidate will play a critical role in providing high-quality legal services to various clients across DCCEEW to support its work in sustaining and improving the environment and heritage of NSW. 

About the role  

The Senior Legal Officer roles are suited to experienced lawyers keen to utilise their strong analytical skills and expertise to provide high-quality legal advisory services and crucial legal support within DCCEEW. With the support of senior lawyers within the Environment and Strategic Advice Legal team, the work of a Senior Legal Officer will include:

• preparing legal advice,
• legislative reform, including drafting Bills and regulations,
• working closely with teams within DCCEEW to deliver long-term projects supporting the Department to achieve its strategic objectives, including protection of NSW’s environment and heritage

As an experienced professional, you will support the Principal Legal Officers, the Director and General Counsel to drive delivery on initiatives and goals and contribute to an inclusive, responsive and effective working environment.

About the team

We are a team of regulatory advice and projects lawyers. Our common expertise is in: 

• Statutory interpretation, including of the NSW Constitution and administrative orders
• Administrative law, including delegations
• Drafting tailored, outcomes focused and strategic legal advice

We provide strategic legal advice on whole of DCCEEW matters and environment and heritage portfolios matters, including:

• Policy development and legislative reform
• Interpreting legislation
• Exercising statutory powers and decision‑making
• Native title and Aboriginal land rights
• Indigenous Land Use Agreements
• Whole‑of‑government legislation (including finance, privacy, GIPA and public interest disclosures)
• Inter‑agency and shared services agreements
• Foreign Arrangements Scheme notifications (DFAT)  

We work closely with business areas to support delivery while managing legal risk—now and into the future.

About You 

To be successful in this role you will be a highly motivated professional, with a drive and passion to deliver quality legal advice and services to clients.  You will have strong analytical and research skills with the ability to identify key issues and think critically to find strategically focused and evidence-based solutions.

We welcome applications from passionate lawyers with experience in one or more of the following areas:

• planning, environmental, heritage or natural resource management law;
• administrative law;
• statutory interpretation; and
• legislative reform and policy development.

Undertaking a wide range of tasks with often tight or competing timeframes, our Senior Legal Officers require excellent organisational and prioritisation skills. You will have strong verbal and written communication skills to prepare and deliver clear, authoritative and practical advice. You will also have confidence and the ability to build strong, collaborative relationships with a variety of stakeholders and team members.

Essential Requirements

Applicants must be:

• admitted as an Australian Legal Practitioner in NSW or another eligible jurisdiction,
• hold, or be eligible to hold, a NSW Practising Certificate,
• have experience in one or more of the following areas: planning, environmental, heritage or natural resource management law; administrative law; statutory interpretation; legislative reform and policy development.

Candidates with at least 5 years post admission experience are preferred, however this is not essential.
