First Nations Member: First Nations HREC sub-committee

Research is major strength of Charles Darwin University, and the University prides itself on research carried out that benefits the Northern Territory’s people, animals, and country.

The Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) of the Charles Darwin University reviews projects and other activities undertaken at the University which involve research conducted with or about people. The committee consists of a mixture of University staff and community members covering various areas of expertise and membership categories. This provides members with a chance to review and understand the range of research at CDU as determined by the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research.

The CDU-HREC defines First Nations research as any research that relates to, or may have the potential to impact, the collective rights and interests of First Nations peoples’ lands, waters, cultures and histories. The University invites you to join the First Nations subcommittee to:

· consider the ethical aspects and implications of proposals to conduct research involving First Nations participants, data or knowledge.

· ensure that researchers are appropriately qualified in planning, conducting and reporting research that is relevant to the proposal, and students are appropriately supervised to conduct research.

· certify that research protocols satisfy the ethical standards and codes presented in the Statement, the Code and additional ethical principles for First Nations research as described in the AIATSIS Code of Ethics for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research (2020) (AIATSIS Code).

· consider acceptability of the proposed research with the CDU-HREC guidelines for reviewing and supporting First Nations Research; and report the outcomes of all proposal considerations to the HREC.

The University is currently seeking applications from First Nations Peoples as members of this sub-committee.

· Prepared to express their views.

· Ability to guide and advise on the ethical review of research relating to Australian First Nations Peoples.

· Availability to attend flexibly scheduled CDU-HREC Sub-Committee Meetings.

· Availability to undertake up to six hours reading preparation per meeting.

The First Nations subcommittee will meet seven times each year (approximately every six weeks). The day and time of these meeting can be flexible and will occur 7 to 10 days prior to the scheduled HREC meeting, typically meeting on a Friday morning every six weeks. The length of the meetings will depend on the number and quality of projects of First Nations research proposals.

Payment for external FNSC members

$200 per external FNSC member, per meeting.

Payment is made only when the member attends the meeting and contributes to the review of proposals.

This payment applies only to external FNSC members. Internal FNSC members are not eligible, as participation forms part of their University employment.

Meetings are held at CDU Casuarina Campus; members may also attend via Zoom.

Pay: $200.00 per month
