About the role
About the role
A whole-of-group General Counsel, Company Secretary & Group Compliance role, initially three days a week, working directly with the Chair and Board of one of Australia's most recognised family-owned groups. This is not a contracts-processing job. Day-to-day legal work is handled by Legal Counsel, whom you'll mentor and back on the harder calls. Your time goes where it counts.
Key responsibilities
Trusted adviser to the Chair, the Board and each divisional CEO on governance, risk and compliance
Member of the Audit & Risk Committee, and owner of Board and Committee calendars, agendas, packs, minutes, resolutions, action registers, delegations and governance records
Owner of the Group compliance framework: designing systems and training the divisions run, then reporting to the Board on how practice keeps improving
Company Secretary for Australian Group entities, coordinating statutory administration for New Zealand entities; Group privacy leadership; and Group people and WHS governance oversight
Facilitator of the Group's annual strategy and remuneration cycles
Demonstrated practical use of legal-tech and LLM tools in drafting, research, Board preparation or compliance work
About you
Bachelor of Laws, admitted in NSW, 10+ years' post-admission experience and prior company-secretarial experience, preferably in a multi-entity group
Comfortable holding the senior legal position across a diverse group — from franchise and competition law to privacy and WHS
Board-fluent: you have worked with directors, and you write and speak the way boards need
Highly self-sufficient, with advanced software productivity, document-management and workflow capability
Desirable: LLM/MBA; AICD Directors Course or Governance Institute Graduate Diploma; and technical depth in prompt engineering, RAG, graph engineering and agentic AI governance
About us
Behind one of Australia's most trusted brands sits a diverse private group spanning retail, property and agriculture, with annual sales in the $100–200 million range. It is large enough that the work matters — competition law, franchising, privacy, WHS, modern slavery and governance across Australian and New Zealand entities — and lean enough that you are the senior legal voice in the room.
Benefits
Great remuneration plus 15% at-risk incentive on Group results and special projects
Practising certificate paid
Initial three-day arrangement, with potential hybrid flexibility and scope to increase to full-time over time
