Program Coordinator - Deaf Education

This is a permanent full-time position commencing Term 4, 2026

Shenton College Deaf Education Centre (SCDEC) is a unique secondary environment that provides targeted and highly specialised support for Deaf and hard of hearing students within the auspices of the mainstream Shenton College. As a “school within a school”, staff work in partnership with Shenton College to provide accessible and highly individualised pathways for students. At every opportunity, students are empowered to make choices that challenge them to achieve their personal best and contribute to a stronger sense of wellbeing. Staff strive to create a culturally and linguistically responsive and safe learning environment through authentic relational practices and a focus on the whole child. Staff proactively engage students and families in collaborative, student‑centred decision‑making to co‑design purposeful learning plans that support individual needs, academic aspirations, and maximise post-school pathways. 

SCDEC enrols approximately 40 students from Years 7–12 who have a severe to profound bilateral hearing loss. Students may choose Auslan and/or spoken English as their preferred language to access the curriculum and for social interactions, with many learning English as an additional language through written English. Students may choose to use a range of assistive listening devices to aid auditory access and are provided support to do so.

While SCDEC students can select subjects and courses offered by Shenton College, specialist Deaf Education Centre staff tailor supports to meet students' individual educational needs across the areas of language, literacy, numeracy and personal and social capabilities within a multitiered system of support. Specialist teams of Teachers of the Deaf, SCDEC teachers, educational interpreters, notetakers, captioners and Deaf mentors, collaborate to deliver a wraparound and responsive program for students. The inclusion of Deaf staff members within the team brings an invaluable Deaf lens, lived experience, and a rich cultural and linguistic perspective to the school.

The Role

In collaboration with the Principal and administrative team, you should provide strategic educational leadership to drive evidence-based practices for students who are Deaf and hard of hearing. You would champion change, fostering a school-wide culture of inclusivity and continuous service improvement. Your responsibilities include developing school plans, establishing strict operational systems, and leading comprehensive professional development and coaching programs to maximize workforce effectiveness. Additionally, you will ideally liaise extensively with executive staff, manage complex administrative portfolios, and potentially undertake teaching duties when required to support the school's mission.

You will directly manage and lead staff, building capacity within a diverse and specialist support team, including Teachers of the Deaf, Education Assistants (Auslan), Special Needs Assistants, and Captioners. This role oversees critical portfolios such as Special Education Needs Planning, student reporting, tiered interventions, complex behaviour management, and transition planning. You will also coordinate crucial daily operations, from managing support staff timetables and relief planning to navigating Disability Resourcing and interagency case management.
