With no traffic to contend with on your daily commute and reasonable work hours Monday to Friday along with 6 weeks annual leave you will have no excuse for not committing to work-life balance.
About Us:
The Barkly Regional Council is the second-largest Local Government by land mass in Australia. The estimated population of the Barkly Regional Council is 6,316 spread over 7 communities (2 regional towns and 5 remote communities). Employing 250 staff, of whom 67% are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, we are committed to delivering services for residents of the region.
About the Barkly Region:
The Barkly Region covers more than 320,000 km2 stretching from the old Telegraph Station at Barrow Creek in the south to the historical droving township of Newcastle Waters in the north. Located approximately 1000km south of Darwin and 500km north of Alice Springs. Tennant Creek has a population of 3,252 and is the largest town in the region.

About Tennant Creek:
Tennant Creek is the main service hub for the Barkly Region and a key regional centre in the Northern Territory, located on the Stuart Highway between Alice Springs and Darwin. Tennant Creek is approximately 500 km north of Alice Springs, the nearest major regional centre, and around 1,000 km south of Darwin. It provides essential services, employment, and infrastructure for surrounding remote communities across a vast and remote region. The town has a strong Aboriginal cultural presence and is home to the Warumungu people, with deep cultural connections, ongoing traditions, and a strong sense of community identity. Tennant Creek offers a balanced outback lifestyle, combining open natural landscapes with essential town services and a range of community, sporting, and cultural activities.

Tennant Creek has a well-stocked IGA, specialist retail outlets, hardware and auto stores, cafés, pubs, clubs, a 20-bed public hospital, private medical centre, primary and secondary schools, childcare and early learning facilities, sporting facilities, a Youth Centre, and regular flights to Alice Springs and Darwin.
About the Role:
Barkly Regional Council is seeking a skilled and dedicated Mechanic to join our team! This role offers a fantastic opportunity to work with a supportive organisation committed to serving our diverse communities.
As a Mechanic, you will be responsible for maintaining, servicing, and repairing Council’s fleet, plant, and equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operations across the Barkly region. You will undertake preventative maintenance, diagnostics, repairs, and inspections, supporting workshop operations and supervising day-to-day activities.
This role is based in Tennant Creek but will involve travel to remote communities, with overnight stays as required, to undertake inspections, servicing, repairs, and breakdown responses.
The Essentials:
AUR30405 Certificate III Automotive Mechanical Technology.
AUR31120 Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology.
AUR31520 Certificate III in Automotive Diesel Engine Technology.
Substantial relevant experience in the repair and maintenance of fleet, heavy earthmoving plant and machinery, including the ability to diagnose and rectify mechanical faults.
Demonstrated experience servicing and repairing vehicles and heavy plant in remote or field-based environments.
Demonstrated experience servicing, repairing, and maintaining heavy plant, machinery, trucks, and light vehicles.
Demonstrated ability to diagnose and rectify mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic faults.
Experience implementing preventative maintenance programs and maintaining accurate maintenance records.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a remote and demanding environment.
Demonstrated organisational and time management skills with the ability to prioritise workloads effectively.
Commitment to Work Health and Safety principles and safe work practices.
National Criminal History Check.
Driver's Licence.

You have experience repairing and maintaining heavy vehicles and equipment, with a strong focus on safety and quality.
You’re a problem-solver who enjoys working independently, especially in remote and challenging environments.
You’re committed to delivering reliable service and supporting community safety across the Barkly region.
The Finer Details:
Full-Time – Permanent position paying annual salary of $100,405.65, above award and EA rates – Barkly Regional Council Enterprise Agreement 2024.
12% superannuation.
Six (6) weeks annual leave with 17.5% leave loading.
