External Sales Representative - Steel

Own a territory in a business that measures success on profit, not revenue.
Waypoint is partnering exclusively with Vulcan Steel to appoint three External Sales Representatives at their Carole Park site, two on the aluminium side and one on stainless.

Vulcan Steel is a leading Trans-Tasman metals distribution business with a strong Australian footprint across steel, aluminium and stainless. Carole Park is their Southeast Queensland aluminium hub, servicing eight sites from Rockhampton in the north through to Coffs Harbour in the south.

These are strategic growth appointments. The business is investing deliberately in the site and in the people they bring into it, and is prepared to back the right person with genuine onboarding, mentoring and territory support.

The role
You'll own a fixed external sales territory across metro Brisbane, with your final patch informed by where you live. Candidates living close to their territory are preferred.

The focus is quality over volume. Four to five well-prepared, in-person customer calls a day, working a focused pool of roughly 100 to 120 quality accounts out of a base of around 1,200. Vulcan is not a volume-of-calls business.

You'll drive new business and share-of-wallet growth, segment customers by how they actually buy, and build genuine trusted-adviser relationships that progress from rapport through to real supply chain and price-trend insight.

Cold calling is a genuine part of the role, and most first calls will be a no. Vulcan doesn't want aggressive or heavy-handed selling. Persistence yes, pressure no.

Who will you be working with?
You'll be supported by two experienced site leaders redeployed to Carole Park three days a week for the next twelve months, providing mentorship, customer introductions and technical guidance. The hiring manager will also be hands-on through your first six months.

Vulcan's culture is built on performance, structure and team-first values, and the business has spent the past three years building it deliberately. There is genuine collaboration between sales, internal sales, operations and warehouse. Everyone understands the part they play in the commercial outcome, and reps who recognise that are valued.

What Vulcan is looking for
This is a mindset and commercial acumen hire first, and a product hire second. Product knowledge can be taught through the induction. Commercial thinking and the right approach cannot.

• Strong commercial acumen. Vulcan measures success on GP dollars, not revenue, so you need to think in terms of margin contribution, share of wallet and quality of business
• A structured, disciplined operator who plans a week ahead, prepares properly for calls and maintains consistent deliberate activity
• Resilient. You handle rejection professionally, don't take it personally, and re-engage respectfully over time
• An excellent listener. Vulcan works to an 80/20 listen-to-talk ratio, asking good questions and building understanding before pitching
• Team-first, humble and collaborative, with no ego
• Genuinely curious about product and how customers use it in application
• Optimistic and positive in outlook. This one is non-negotiable
• Based in metro Brisbane

Aluminium or stainless steel sales experience is ideal, and preferred backgrounds include window and door systems, facade and cladding, architectural aluminium, stainless fabrication supply, food-grade stainless equipment or general metals distribution. Vulcan will also consider construction and building materials distribution, technical product sales into fabricators and subcontractors, and specification-driven sales into architects, designers and head contractors. Engineers, technical designers and drafters looking to move into sales are welcome to apply where the softer skills are strong.

Location and working arrangements
Fully office and territory based at Carole Park, with three to four days a week in-territory. Vulcan values in-person culture and does not run a hybrid working model.
