About The Role
This is a unique opportunity for an experienced research engineer to contribute to technologies that influence global standards within video compression and machine learning. Working within Canon Oceania's Research team, you will conduct advanced research, generate innovative ideas, develop intellectual property and represent Canon in international standards setting organisations.
You will explore emerging technologies, perform experimentation and collaborate with technical experts to help shape the next generation of industry standards adopted around the world. This role offers the opportunity to work on highly specialised research initiatives while contributing to outcomes with global reach.
What You’ll Do
Conducting research into video compression, computer vision and machine learning technologiesInvestigating technologies undergoing standardisation within international standards-setting organisationsDesigning and executing experiments to evaluate and improve emerging standardsGenerating innovative concepts and contributing to patent and intellectual property developmentPreparing and presenting technical contributions to international standards bodies and working groupsCollaborating with global research teams, stakeholders and intellectual property specialistsSupporting the adoption of new technologies into international standards
What You Bring
As a Senior Research Engineer, you will play a key role in advancing research initiatives that contribute to technology standards targeting global adoption. You will combine deep technical expertise with creativity, analytical thinking and the ability to communicate complex concepts to specialist audiences. Working both independently and collaboratively, you will help drive innovation and research outcomes that have worldwide impact. Key skills and experience include:
Expertise in video compression standards (HEVC, VVC or similar) and machine learning, particularly computer visionStrong Python and C++ programming skills, with experience in Linux-based environmentsExcellent technical communication skills with the ability to present complex concepts to specialist audiencesProven ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality research outcomesExperience participating in standards organisations, patent development or intellectual property activities, is highly regardedUnderstanding of hardware and software implementation considerations is advantageousA PhD in a relevant discipline, is highly regardedWillingness to travel internationally to participate in standards meetings and technical forums
