Senior Family Violence Crisis Specialist- Brief Intervention

Safe Steps is the only 24/7, family violence response centre in Victoria, providing a “state-wide entry point” for victim-survivors of domestic and family violence. Services include information and referral, crisis response, specialist family violence risk assessment, safety planning, Webchat, and access to supported crisis accommodation.

Our practice is trauma-informed and guided by evidence. We provide services to all victim-survivors and recognise that most of our work is dedicated to the needs of women and children which reflects the gendered nature of domestic and family violence.

THE ROLE

We are seeking a Senior Family Violence Crisis Specialist to join our Brief Intervention team in a part-time (0.8 FTE) capacity, working four days per week.

Working within Victoria's only 24/7 family violence response service, you will support victim-survivors with complex needs, elevated risk, and intersecting challenges. In addition to direct client work, you will provide practice leadership, secondary consultation, and coaching to Family Violence Crisis Specialists, helping to strengthen service quality and outcomes across the team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Service Delivery

• Provide telephone and web-based crisis intervention, information, referrals and support.
• Deliver brief intervention case management and risk management planning.
• Conduct family violence risk and needs assessments using the MARAM Framework.
• Work collaboratively with Child Protection, Victoria Police and specialist support services to advocate for victim-survivors and children.
• Support clients experiencing complex family violence and intersecting needs.

Practice Leadership

• Provide practice guidance and secondary consultation to Family Violence Crisis Specialists.
• Support skill development through coaching, supervision and induction activities.
• Assist with complex case consultations and multidisciplinary responses.

Continuous Improvement

• Contribute to service improvement projects and initiatives.
• Participate in reflective practice, supervision and professional development.
• Promote inclusive, culturally safe and accessible service delivery.
• Uphold Safe Steps’ commitment to inclusion, equity, and cultural safety for all communities

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

• Bachelor of Social Work or equivalent qualification, or willingness to work towards one
• Minimum 5 years’ experience in the specialist family violence sector or supporting people impacted by domestic, family or sexual violence.
• Demonstrated experience conducting family violence risk and needs assessments.
• Experience developing and implementing risk management responses for victim-survivors.
• Strong understanding of trauma-informed, family violence-informed and person-centred practice.
• Completed MARAM training with demonstrated experience applying the framework in practice.
• Strong understanding of the Victorian specialist family violence sector and relevant legislation.
• Demonstrated ability to manage complex situations and competing priorities in a crisis environment.
• Leadership capability to provide secondary consultation and support to practitioners.
• Current Working with Children Check and willingness to undergo a National Police Check.

Desirable

• Experience in brief intervention or crisis response services.
• Experience supporting clients with complex and intersecting needs.
• Experience facilitating case consultations or mentoring practitioners.
• Knowledge of Victorian family violence reforms, FVISS and CISS.
