Funded through the AFL Brain Health Initiative, this part-time two-year fixed term opportunity, provides a unique opportunity to combine elite sport, clinical practice and research. The role is 0.2, one day per week which can be worked flexibly.
You will report operationally to the Chief Medical Officer working closely with Club Psychologists and the AFLW Doctor while contributing to the assessment, monitoring and long-term wellbeing of elite AFL and AFLW athletes. The role will also engage with the broader AFL Brain Health Initiative research network to support the successful delivery of both clinical and research outcomes.
About The Role
This is a newly created role that will:
Conduct pre-season baseline, post-concussion and club-exit neurocognitive assessments across AFL and AFLW programs.Apply a client-centered, hypothetico-deductive approach to neuropsychological assessment and clinical opinion.Provide evidence-based neuropsychological feedback and recommendations to players and healthcare staff.Support rehabilitation recommendations arising from neuropsychological assessment.Manage and escalating care for players who require additional clinical support.Facilitate player recruitment and engagement in the AFL Brain Health Initiative research program.Collect, monitor and manage research data in line with ethical, privacy and governance requirements.Act as a key contact for players regarding brain health and Brain Health Initiative participation.
About You
You are a Clinical Neurologist with a:
Masters Degree or Clinical Doctorate in Clinical Neuropsychology.Current AHPRA registration.Current Working With Children Check.Professional indemnity insurance.Current driver licence.Minimum two years postgraduate experience.Completion of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) Training, or willingness to obtain certification prior to commencement.Willingness to travel as required.
Desirable Experience
Experience working in a sports medicine or elite sporting environment.Experience working with professional athletes.Experience undertaking concussion or sport-related concussion research.Flexibility to see players across the week to accommodate changing player schedules during peak football periods, including pre-season.
