Media, Communications and Campaigns Officer

The Medical Scientists Association of Victoria, part of the Health Services Union Vic No. 4 Branch, is a registered trade Union representing workers in public, community and private sector health settings, working as medical scientists, hospital pharmacists, psychologists, medical physicists, dietitians, audiologists, genetic counsellors and clinical perfusionists across Victoria.

We are looking for someone who understands Unions, shares our progressive values and passion for social justice, and has a broad mix of media and communications skills.

This role is a bit of a dynamic "all-rounder" comms position - including, for example, responsibility for generating social media content, writing regular newsletter emails or other bulletins, generating website content (with support), some visual design work, and some media engagement and coordination as needed. The successful candidate will be working closely with our organising and industrial staff, as well as our Union leadership, to publicise wins, communicate with members, develop and promote campaigns, raise the profile of our members and our work, and more.

Necessary Experience & Qualifications (negotiable for the right applicant):

• Previous experience in a Union comms role will be highly regarded.
  • Where an applicant has experience working within Unions in other non-Comms roles,  but can demonstrate relevant skills, this will be considered.
  • Consideration will also be given to applicants with experience in a comms role outside of the Union movement, but who can demonstrate aligned values.
• Ability to write for a range of audiences - including formal correspondence, persuasive messaging, semi-formal or casual correspondence, and shortform engaging writing e.g. on social media.
• Developed graphic/visual design skills will be looked on favourably, but basic design skills using e.g. Canva will be sufficient.
• Familiarity with and understanding of a range of social media platforms, and ability to monitor, maintain and grow the reach of Union accounts across these platforms.
• Experience engaging with journalists and traditional media will be advantageous but not strictly required.
• Ability to understand a campaign objective, and develop messaging and content (and contribute to strategy) in support of achieving this.
• Knowledge of the health sector would be an advantage but not essential.
• Demonstrated commitment to trade Union values.
• Ability to work as part of a relatively small but growing Union staff profile, and as the sole/all-rounder comms officer in the team.
• Any relevant formal qualifications will be well-regarded but are not essential (relevant postgraduate qualifications may attract a Higher Qualifications Allowance).

While we are looking primarily for a full-time applicant, part-time hours may be able to be negotiated for the right applicant (and applicants' individual circumstances or needs will be taken into account).

The terms and conditions we provide our workers are heavily based on what we negotiate for our key member groups:

• ADO / RDO per month if full-time.
• 5 weeks annual leave.
• Three additional days paid leave over Christmas / New Year period.
• Long Service Leave entitlement of 6 months after 15 years, able to be accessed pro rata after 5 years.
• Discretionary 2% allowance which may be be paid directly as salary or additional superannuation.

Work can be performed hybrid; both in office (Carlton) and from home, with some negotiable flexibility around this (noting that there will be an expectation to be out in members' workplaces or other locations from time to time as needed). The exact working hours are negotiable.
