Principal Geotechnical Engineer

We are not looking for someone to inherit an impressive title and spend their days in meetings.

We are looking for an experienced geotechnical engineer who still enjoys solving difficult ground problems, improving the work of other engineers and taking responsibility for sound technical outcomes.

BHM Geotechnical is a geotechnical and environmental consultancy entering a significant growth phase. We have an established client base, our own drilling capability through TerraForma Drilling, ISO certified management systems and a clear plan to grow into a substantially larger professional services business.

The opportunity

As our Principal Geotechnical Engineer (Technical Delivery & Assurance), you will be responsible for ensuring that reporting and technical standards of reports within your team are up to the standards that we set. You will lead complex projects, review and sign reports within your areas of competence, mentor engineers and help build the technical systems required for the next stage of our growth.

This is a hands on leadership role and will suit someone with previous experience coordinating a team. You will remain involved in meaningful project work and client discussions, but you will also have the authority to improve how investigations are scoped, how reports are reviewed and how technical knowledge is developed across the business.

Your focus will be technical delivery, professional judgement and developing an operationally robust team.

What you will do

• Lead complex geotechnical investigations and advisory projects.

• Review and sign technical reports within your demonstrated competence.

• Provide senior input into non-standard scopes, proposals and client discussions.

• Mentor engineers and develop additional competent reviewers and signatories.

• Improve technical procedures, report templates and quality controls.

• Assist with technical complaints, difficult projects and higher-risk matters.

• Work with management to expand BHM into larger commercial, development and specialist assignments.

What we are looking for

You will likely have:

• Approximately 7–10+ years of Australian geotechnical consulting experience.

• Chartered status, NER registration or an equivalent recognised professional credential or eligible for it.

• Demonstrated experience reviewing geotechnical reports.

• Strong professional judgement and confidence dealing directly with clients.

• Broad experience across investigations, foundations, earthworks, retaining structures, pavements, slopes or related geotechnical services.

• The ability to explain complex technical issues clearly and improve the work of others.

• A practical, commercially aware approach without compromising technical independence.

Experience in forensic matters, land development, construction support, residential consulting or expert work would be advantageous.
