About the Role

The Daily Beast’s Australia team is growing, and we’re looking for an experienced deputy editor who devours U.S. news to join us.

The Australia team is part of The Daily Beast’s international around-the-clock newsroom, and helps to cover breaking news from politics to premieres.

We’re looking for someone who is deeply interested in U.S. politics and who can source, edit and manage stories and journalists.

The ideal candidate is an all-rounder who is on top of U.S. politics, global news, media and pop culture. You have a deep understanding of American culture, preferably having lived in the U.S., or a track record of working for American publications. If you are obsessed with Trump, Truth Social, and all things Trumpworld, from Marjorie Taylor Greene to the upcoming midterms, this job could be for you.

The successful applicant will help the Australia Bureau Chief manage everyday duties and take a key role in leading daily news coverage, sourcing stories, creating headlines and editing copy.

The ideal candidate will have experience in breaking news journalism, a sharp editorial eye, and the ability to drive compelling and impactful news coverage that will lead the website.

Key Responsibilities

• Assisting the Australia Bureau Chief to oversee news coverage, ensuring timely, accurate and engaging reporting.

• Writing brilliant headlines that compel readers to read intelligently written stories.

• Working closely with our brilliant Visuals department to make every story sparkle.

• Assigning and editing stories, providing guidance to reporters to produce high-quality content. Must also be comfortable with writing breaking news when needed.

• Monitoring news trends to stay ahead of the competition.

• Curating the Daily Beast’s homepage and updating social feeds with fresh content.

• Maintaining high journalistic standards and uphold The Daily Beast's editorial voice.

• Be across multiple timezones to effectively communicate with the global team.

• An understanding of the Daily Beast’s voice and dynamic tone.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 4 years of experience in journalism, with at least 2 years in an editing role.

• Exceptional writing, editing, and communication skills.

• Strong news judgment and the ability to make quick editorial decisions.

• Deep understanding of digital media and audience engagement strategies.

• Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines with a small team.

Pay Range Salary

The pay range for this position is $110,000 AUD to $140,000 AUD.

We are recruiting one full-time Deputy, Monday-Friday, however some weekend shifts and flexibility may be required. Starting times will vary depending on the season, but range between 7 a.m.-10 a.m. AEST.

This is a permanent role in a contractor position. You must be based outside of the U.S. to apply. The role is work from home but may change as the Beast expands operations. You do not have to be based in Sydney for the role. Finalists will be required to undertake a copy and headline test and quiz. Please submit examples of published work in your application.
