About the role
This role brings together two complementary position descriptions in one appointment. The Security and Export Control Officer will report to the Head of Legal for export control and trade compliance matters, while also reporting to the General Manager Operations in their capacity as Chief Security Officer for Defence security matters. The role will act as C4i’s subject matter expert across Defence security, DISP obligations and export control compliance, providing practical governance, assurance and advisory support in a highly specialised Defence and mission-critical communications environment.
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Defence security
Lead C4i’s Defence security obligations, including security governance, DISP compliance and day-to-day advisory support.
Act as a key point of contact for Defence security matters, providing practical guidance across the business.
Maintain security processes, records, logs, audits and reporting to support compliance with Commonwealth security requirements.
Coordinate security clearance processes, workforce screening, onboarding and offboarding security obligations.
Support secure room requirements, classified information handling, COMSEC-related records and controlled equipment processes.
Export control and trade compliance
Manage export control and trade compliance activities, including Technology Control Plan processes, permits, licences, records and controlled transfers.
Provide export control advice across sales, project delivery, product development and operations.
Deliver or coordinate trade compliance induction, annual refresher and functional training as required.
Support compliance reviews, audits, corrective actions and regulatory reporting requirements.
Across both areas
Promote a strong security and compliance culture through practical guidance, training and continuous improvement.
About you
You will bring practical Defence security experience and the confidence to advise others in a regulated environment. Detail-oriented, commercially aware and collaborative, you will be comfortable interpreting security and export control requirements, working with teams across the business and maintaining governance processes that support secure, compliant delivery.
Essential requirements
Hold or be eligible to hold a current Australian Government Security Clearance at NV1 level or higher.
Completion of Defence Security Officer training, or equivalent Defence security training.
Demonstrated experience working within a DISP member organisation or comparable Defence, government or national security environment.
Sound knowledge of Defence security requirements, including governance, personnel, physical and information security obligations.
Experience handling classified information, assets or equipment in accordance with Commonwealth security requirements.
Strong judgement, communication, stakeholder engagement and record-keeping skills, with the ability to influence a positive security culture.
Desirable / highly regarded
Experience in export control, trade compliance, Technology Control Plans, and permit or licence processes will be highly regarded.
Exposure to COMSEC custodian or account management duties would be advantageous.
PSPF or DISP practitioner training would be advantageous.
Previous military experience handling sensitive information or equipment, or a Certificate IV in Government Security or equivalent security-related qualification, would be well regarded.
