Digital Communications Manager

About the position

We're looking for a creative and strategic Digital Communications Manager to join our Naarm-based team and grow Queer Town’s digital reach, community and impact. 

Queer Town is an Australian-based, queer-led social enterprise working to end LGBTIQA+ discrimination through education, storytelling and systems-change. We work closely with organisations, schools, government agencies and communities across Australia (and beyond) to dismantle the day-to-day barriers facing LGBTIQA+ communities and develop long-term cultures of inclusion. 

A few of Queer Town’s clients include: AFL, City of Melbourne, Cotton On Group, GMHBA and Zoos Victoria. Queer Town is proudly the inaugural Impact Partner of The Australian Ballet and was awarded the LGBTIQA+ Melbourne Award in 2024 for the impact of our education and community engagement across Naarm.  

As Queer Town’s Digital Communications Manager, you'll lead the re-development of our digital strategy and bring it to life across our digital channels, through a range of mediums, supporting Queer Town to achieve its organisational goals. The primary purpose of this role in the immediate term is to grow Queer Town's digital presence in a way that increases awareness of our brand and impact, generates high-quality business enquiries, expands our online community and supports long-term organisational growth.

Key focuses of the role

Digital Strategy & Planning

• Develop a digital communications strategy across Queer Town’s online channels, aligned with business outcomes, including targets, creative outputs, scheduling and evaluation
• Consistently review digital analytics, identifying trends and adjusting strategies accordingly
• Design and execute digital campaigns that align with relevant business outcomes, advocacy and events

Content Creation

• Create engaging, high-quality digital content including graphics, written copy, and short-form video
• Develop case studies and capture stories from client experiences, participant feedback and community engagement
• Personally write copy that embodies Queer Town's authenticity and values 

Social Media Management & Community Engagement

• Manage Queer Town's digital / social media channels with consistency and intention
• Respond meaningfully to comments, messages and social media enquiries
• Foster digital relationships with individuals and organisations in Queer Town’s ecosystem

Email Communications

• Oversee e-newsletter communications, featuring stories, updates, opportunities and resources
• Develop email campaigns that nurture leads and drive enquiries for Queer Town’s services

Your experience

This is not an entry-level role. This position requires an individual with the applicable experience and confidence to develop and execute a successful digital strategy, as well as the technical skills required for high quality content creation. 

The vision for this role is to grow to 4 days per week and oversee the growth and management of Queer Town’s digital operations. Therefore, we are seeking an individual with the vision, commitment and experience to support the growth of Queer Town and play a key role in achieving our long-term business goals and outcomes. 

Essential skills and experience 

• Demonstrated experience developing impactful digital communications strategies for (small) organisations 
• Experience managing social media platforms and online community engagement
• Confidence creating digital content using basic design tools (e.g. Canva)
• Strong writing ability 
• Experience designing and executing digital campaigns that achieve measurable outcomes
• Expertise reviewing digital analytics and using data to inform strategy and decision-making
• Experience working collaboratively in a small team with a common goal 
• Ability to work independently, using initiative to prioritise and manage your workflow
• Genuine investment in LGBTIQA+ rights and lived experiences 

Nice-to-have skills and experience

• Photography, videography or audio content creation
• Experience with email marketing platforms (e.g. Mailchimp)
• Website management or content management systems (e.g. Squarespace)
• Experience working in for-purpose, mission-driven organisations or initiatives

What we’re offering

• 16 hours (2 days) per week, with the aim of growing to 4 days in the medium term
  • We acknowledge the constraints of a 2-day week initially and therefore you'll be supported to achieve your outcomes by both the General Manager and CEO, as required
• $38 p/hour baseline salary, plus 12% superannuation
• Hybrid model (e.g. one day in-person from Collingwood team office, one day remote)
