About the role
$140,000 to $165,000 base + superBuild vital.ly's design system and shape how product design scales as the business growsHybrid role (minimum 1 day in Alexandria office each week)
vital.ly is the infrastructure behind sustainable clinical practice.
Trusted by over 15,000 practitioners across Australia, vital.ly combines a technology platform, distribution infrastructure, and practitioner expertise to support how clinics prescribe, dispense, and manage complementary medicines.
Our customers include integrative GPs, naturopaths, nutritionists, herbalists, and other healthcare professionals working in the natural and integrative health industry.
Externally, the platform supports wholesale ordering for clinic dispensaries, advanced prescribing workflows with built-in clinical safety features, and digital prescriptions sent directly to patients for online fulfilment - all powered by Australia's most comprehensive complementary medicine reference tools.
Internally, the platform is the backbone of our distribution business, turning prescriptions into deliveries. It provides customised workflows and tools for practitioner access, patient data, inventory, orders and reference content, making this ecosystem uniquely powerful.
Design sits at the centre of how these experiences come together, shaping how practitioners, patients and internal teams interact with the platform as vital.ly continues to scale.
We're now investing in the next stage of our product design capability. You'll join an established platform with real scale and complexity, while still having the opportunity to build vital.ly's design system and help shape how Design, Product and Engineering work together as AI changes the way digital products are designed and built.
This is a hands-on Senior Product Designer role reporting to our Head of Design, with significant influence over how our product experience and design capability evolve.
Who this role is for
You are a senior, hands-on product designer who wants to stay close to the work. You can independently take complex design problems from discovery and research through to detailed design, validation and what ultimately ships;
You have strong design judgement. You can explain the reasoning behind your design decisions, make difficult trade-offs and maintain a high bar for usability, interaction and visual design, not just produce polished screens;
You think in systems, not individual screens or one-off solutions. You have helped build or significantly evolve a design system and understand how components, patterns and design tokens need to work in practice for both Design and Engineering;
You are comfortable joining a scaling business where not everything has already been established. You can bring structure to ambiguous design problems and help build the design practices and processes we need as we grow;
You want to work with Product and Engineering from the beginning of a problem, not receive a finished brief and hand back a Figma file. You can work through technical constraints, implementation decisions and trade-offs with Engineering and stay involved through to the shipped experience;
You use research, usability testing and validation to make better design decisions. You know when more evidence is needed and when there is enough to make the call and move forward;
You already use Claude, Figma AI and other AI tools as part of your design process. You see AI as a way to explore, prototype, validate and iterate faster while maintaining strong underlying design craft;
You are interested in helping shape how Design, Product and Engineering work together as AI changes product development, including how that operating model evolves as the tools and possibilities change;
You can present and defend your design thinking clearly, take direct feedback and work through disagreement without needing everyone to share your point of view;
You want to remain a senior individual contributor. This is a role for someone who wants significant design responsibility and influence while continuing to do the work themselves, not someone looking for their next people-management role.
THE RESPONSIBILITIES
Product UX/UI & Design SystemLead product design across vital.ly's signed-in customer experience, including the internal operations platform and the customer-facing platform;Lead the design of major new and redesigned product experiences from discovery through to delivery;Build and evolve vital.ly's design system, including components, patterns, design tokens and documentation, in a form that can be effectively implemented and reused by Engineering;Run user research, usability testing and design validation to inform design decisions;Translate user needs, product requirements and technical constraints into clear user flows, interactions and interface designs;Maintain a high standard of usability, consistency and visual design across the product experience.
AI-Integrated Design & PrototypingUse Claude, Figma AI and similar tools as a genuine part of the design process to accelerate exploration, iteration and validation while maintaining strong underlying design craft;Build AI-assisted interactive prototypes to test and validate concepts before committing to development;Explore and apply new AI-enabled design capabilities where they can improve design quality, speed or collaboration;Help develop and evolve how Design, Product and Engineering work together as AI-assisted product development changes how concepts are explored, specified and delivered.
Product & Engineering CollaborationPartner with Product from discovery and scoping through delivery and post-launch iteration, ensuring design contributes to defining the problem and solution rather than beginning at handoff;Work closely with Engineering on design tokens, component specifications, responsive behaviour, interaction states and other implementation requirements to support accurate and efficient delivery;Partner with Product and Engineering to scope and sequence design system and product work;Present and explain design decisions clearly to the Head of Design, Product, Engineering and other stakeholders, incorporating feedback while maintaining a clear design rationale;Review implemented experiences and work with Engineering to resolve material differences between the intended design and shipped experience.
Broader Design ContributionProvide design support across brand, social, events, print, presentations and other business needs when additional Design Team capacity is required;Apply vital.ly's brand and design standards consistently when working outside the core product design remit;Contribute to significant company-wide initiatives and events where broader Design Team support is required.
REQUIREMENTS
Must haves:Senior-level experience in product and UX/UI design, with demonstrated experience independently taking complex design work from problem definition through to a shipped experience;Experience building a design system from scratch or taking significant responsibility for establishing and evolving one, including reusable components, patterns, design tokens and documentation;Strong portfolio demonstrating senior-level product and platform design across complex user flows, interaction design and UI design, including examples of work delivered through to production;Demonstrated experience using Claude, Figma AI and other AI-assisted design tools throughout the design process, including examples of work developed using AI-assisted workflows and shipped to production;Strong prototyping capability, including building interactive prototypes for concept exploration, usability testing and design validation;Strong design-to-development handoff capability, including design tokens, component specifications, responsive behaviour, interaction states and front-end implementation requirements, without requiring production coding skills;Experience conducting user research, usability testing and design validation and applying the findings to product design decisions;Degree in a design or creative discipline, such as visual communication, industrial design or fine art, or equivalent relevant professional experience;Unrestricted and ongoing work rights in Australia.
Nice to haves:Experience working in a scale-up environment;Experience designing B2B2C or platform products;Experience designing products in health-tech or another regulated industry;Experience across broader visual design, including brand, digital, presentation or other business design work;Experience with Miro, Confluence or similar collaborative and workshop tools.
