Primary objective
The provision of high quality inpatient and outpatient paediatric care including assessment and management of a wide range
of acute general paediatrics, developmental, behavioural, adolescent and other general paediatric conditions.
Context statement
Katherine Hospital has an 8 bed paediatric ward and is supported by the Royal Darwin Hospital paediatric service. The
position will work in paediatrics in the inpatient ward and community outreach services across the Big Rivers Region. As a
Rural Generalist the position will also be rostered and provide on-call cover to the ED and other inpatient units.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide high quality care and advice on the management of paediatric patients, including initial assessment, treatment
and on-going management of paediatric patients on the ward, attendees in the Emergency Department and obstetric
service.
2. Provide community outreach services to paediatric patients across the Big Rivers Region, including ACCHOs under the
Single Employer Model.
3. Provide, coordinate and facilitate diagnosis, patient management and discharge planning.
4. Liaise with internal and external stakeholders, including other medical and nursing staff, paramedical and retrieval services
at both clinical and administrative levels.
5. Lead and participate in continuing medical education, professional development, peer review, research and teaching,
including the provision of training to medical and nursing personnel in aspects of paediatric care.
6. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being
undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
7. Foster a positive workplace culture through leadership practices and role modelling behaviour.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia as a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General
Practitioners (RACGP) or Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) or equivalent.
2. Recognised Advanced Specialised Training in paediatrics or equivalent experience.
3. Demonstrated ability to interact positively in a cross cultural work environment.
4. Evidence of commitment to continuing education, teaching, research and quality assurance activities.
Desirable
5. Experience in rural/remote medical practice and /or Australian Indigenous health.
