About the role
We're a privately owned Australian technology and manufacturing business. We design, build and operate our own connected hardware, and we run our own software platform behind it — no off-the-shelf stack, no vendor doing the thinking for us.
Right now that platform is carried by a very small team. We're looking for another senior engineer of the same calibre: someone who can own systems end to end, has real judgement about what to build, and can lead the technical direction as we scale.
This is not a role where you'll be handed tickets. If you need a spec written for you, this isn't it.
Core platform — Python/FastAPI services and a React front end that run a nationally deployed fleet of connected devices. Real-time state, telemetry, alerting, reporting.
AI applications — building genuinely useful internal and customer-facing AI tooling: LLM-backed assistants, agents that watch data and act on it, retrieval over our own operational data. We're early here and there's a lot of room to shape it.
Device and video integration — IP cameras, routers, IoT hardware. ONVIF/RTSP, vendor APIs, low-latency streaming (WebRTC), and the occasional bit of protocol reverse engineering when the documentation is wrong or missing.
ERP implementation — we're rolling out a new ERP across the business. You'll be the technical owner of the integration work: data migration, APIs, connecting the ERP to the platform so the business runs on one set of numbers.
Infrastructure — self-hosted Linux, networking, VPNs, deployment. We run our own gear. You ship it, you support it.
We hire for raw intelligence first. If you're genuinely smart and curious, we'll back you into things you haven't done before.
Beyond that:
5+ years building and shipping production software you were accountable for
Strong Python and modern JavaScript/TypeScript (React); comfortable across the full stack
Real Linux and networking competence — you're not lost outside a managed cloud console
Hands-on experience building with LLMs, not just using them
You've integrated messy third-party systems before and enjoyed it more than you should have
Clear communicator — you can explain a technical trade-off to someone who runs the business, not just to other engineers
Full Australian working rights and able to work on-site in western Sydney
Nice to have: IoT or hardware-adjacent experience, video streaming, ERP or accounting system integration, and any track record of being the person who unblocks everyone else.
Small team, no bureaucracy, direct line to the founder — decisions get made in hours, not quarters
You'll see your work running on physical equipment in the field, not just a dashboard
Genuine scope to define our AI direction rather than maintain someone else's
Brand new facility at Emu Plains, and a business that's growing quickly
We pay properly for the right person
Skip the cover letter. In the application message, answer these three:
Describe a system you built or rescued that you're proud of. What was hard about it, and what would you do differently now?
Tell us about something you've built with LLMs — what worked, what didn't, and where you think the technology is genuinely useful versus overhyped.
You inherit a production system with no documentation and one person who knows how it works. Your first two weeks — what do you do?
Short answers are fine. We read every one.
