Peer Support Worker - Townsville

About the role

As a Peer Support Worker, you will draw on your lived experience and understanding of mental health to deliver group activities and programs that support individuals living with mental illness, using a compassionate, person-centred approach.

In your role as a Peer Support Worker, you will use your personal journey of mental health recovery to inspire optimism and empower others. By offering trauma-informed support, you will create a safe space where lived experience is recognised as a vital foundation for healing and connection.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Providing empathetic, person-centred support to individuals living with mental health challenges
• Enhancing access to mental health services and improving health outcomes across the region, with a focus on equity and inclusion
• Building and maintaining collaborative relationships with community members and key stakeholders
• Reducing reliance on acute and intensive mental health services by supporting early intervention and recovery strategies
• Contributing to the development and delivery of recovery-oriented group programs grounded in lived experience
• Facilitating group-based activities that promote connection, skill-building, and mental wellbeing

About you

To be considered for this rewarding role you will have:

• Highly developed person-centred communication skills
• Excellent communication skills
• Ability to work under minimal supervision with the capacity to exercise initiative in the application of work processes and procedures and establish objectives and outcomes
• A demonstrated ability to show empathy and compassion

Role requirements

• Lived experience with mental health recovery
• Certificate IV in Mental health or equivalent (desirable)
• Current nationally recognised first aid and CPR certificates (or the ability to obtain)
• Positive Notice Working with Children (blue card) (or the ability to obtain)
• NDIS Worker Screening Clearance (or the ability to obtain)
• NDIS Worker Orientation Module "Quality, Safety & You" completion certificate (or the ability to obtain)
• Current minimum P1 "C" class Queensland drivers licence
• Roadworthy vehicle with comprehensive insurance

The Peer Support Worker is a casual position based in Townsville.
