The Role

We are currently recruiting an Explosive Ordnance Armaments Technician with the Department of Defence at Defence Establishment Orchard Hills. This workshop based role is critical to ensuring the safety, functionality, and readiness of Australian Defence Force guided weapon systems and explosive ordnance. You will apply your electronic skills to perform end to end maintenance activities on guided weapons and associated support equipment, working in accordance with approved technical documentation and strict safety requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

• Undertake electronic maintenance to certify Guided Weapons and associated support equipment, including inspection, servicing, disassembly, repair, assembly, alignment, calibration, testing, and technical certification.
• Apply current technical data and approved maintenance documentation within an explosive ordnance environment.
• Operate within a highly regulated environment, adhering to all safety, quality assurance, and compliance requirements.
• Accurately record maintenance activities in technical documentation and electronic maintenance systems.
• Work collaboratively within a team and communicate effectively with supervisors, technical staff, engineers and other stakeholders.
• Maintain and develop technical skills and capability through a combination of in house training and external courses, including structured on the job, hands on training under the guidance of qualified team members.

Conditions of Employment:

• Must be eligible to hold an Australian Government Security Clearance.
• Must be able to work at location to a standard working week, no work from home is available.
• Will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and undergo regular safety and medical assessments.
• Will be required to pass an on-boarding medical assessment.
• Will be required to participate in a 6 month probation period.
• The occupant of this role may be required to participate in shift work arrangements as operationally required, which may include nights and weekends, as well as undertaking intermittent domestic or international travel for work and training.

This role has been identified as requiring access to International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) controlled technologies. The ITAR is United States (US) law that controls the manufacture, sale, use and access of defence and military end-use articles on the United States Munitions List. It is the policy of the US to deny exports of ITAR controlled technologies to proscribed countries. 

This may also apply to access by persons who hold or have held a citizenship, or current permanent residency, of said countries. Defence utilises workforce mechanisms to mitigate these restrictions, which will require applicants provide details of all current citizenships and permanent residencies, as well as previously held citizenships. Defence collects citizenship details to confirm an applicant’s eligibility for the role and to maintain compliance with international obligations.

EOMD is an integral part of Maritime & Maintenance Branch, which is part of the Defence Delivery Group. Our team consists of various disciplines (including engineering, maintenance & technical inspection, project management, commercial, logistics, and corporate enabling services). We are located in Canberra, Penrith, Amberley, Melbourne and HMAS Stirling in Perth. Our focus is to acquire and sustain guided weapons and munitions for the Australian Defence Force.

Our Ideal Candidate

Our ideal candidate is a hands on technician with experience gained in an electrical trade or a closely related electrical maintenance environment. You bring practical, workshop based skills such as electrical servicing, fault finding, component replacement, and working with hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment.

You are comfortable working from technical manuals, specifications, and procedures, and you apply a high level of attention to detail to ensure work is completed accurately, safely, and in accordance with required standards. You understand the importance of compliance, traceability, and doing the job right the first time. You are organised, reliable, and able to manage competing tasks in a busy workshop, while working effectively both independently and as part of a team. You communicate clearly with supervisors and colleagues and are open to learning new systems, equipment, and regulatory requirements. Previous Defence or Explosive Ordnance experience is not required, and training will be provided to support your transition into the role.

What You’ll Bring:

• A trade qualification such as Electrical, Avionics, Industrial Electronics and Control, Electronics and Communications Engineering, Electrotechnology Electrician or relevant equivalent. 
• Strong practical skills in electrical maintenance, inspection, servicing, and fault finding within a workshop or industrial environment.
• Demonstrated attention to detail and a commitment to completing work in line with technical instructions, safety requirements, and quality standards.
• Experience completing maintenance documentation such as job cards, service reports, inspection records, fault reports, or electronic maintenance systems.
• An understanding of the importance of accurate record keeping, traceability, and compliance to support safety, auditing, and ongoing maintenance history.
• A safety focused mindset and the ability to consistently follow procedures and authorised processes.
• Clear communication skills and the ability to work both independently and also collaboratively within a team environment.
• A willingness to learn new equipment, systems, and regulatory frameworks, and to apply existing trade skills in a highly controlled technical environment.

Security Clearance:

Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at “Negative Vetting Level 1”.

Mandatory Qualifications:

This technical position requires the individual to have obtained a recognised Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Level 3 - Level 6 qualification in a relevant technical domain or relevant skills and work experience such that an individual can reasonably achieve a recognised AQF qualification if required by the position.
