About the Business Unit

Under the leadership of the Chief Municipal Inspector, the Local Government Inspectorate (LGI) is an independent administrative office hosted by the Department of Justice and Community Safety. It is the dedicated integrity agency for local government focussing on investigations for offences and compliance with the Local Government Act 2020 (Act).

About the Role

As an Inspector of Municipal Administration, you will participate in the key functions of the Inspectorate, including the assessment of complaints, conducting initial action enquiries and subsequent investigations. This includes making enquiries with councils, complainants, and witnesses, conducting interviews where necessary, documenting all actions and activity.

The role also includes assisting in the development and delivery of proactive governance examinations of councils and assisting in broader reviews of systemic issues across the local government sector.

Assessment and investigation functions must be conducted, in an effective, efficient, fair and timely manner to ensure the integrity and transparency of local government in Victoria.

Some of your duties will include:

• Review in jurisdiction complaints to assess the required response by the LGI in consideration of the Local Government Act 2020 (Act) and other Acts, including but not limited to the PID Act and the Crimes Act.
• Conduct initial action assessments and enquiries to substantiate or disprove the allegations of the complaint.
• Conduct complex formal investigations or examination processes through the collection, collation, recording of evidence and information.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

• Knowledge of Legislation: Demonstrated good understanding of the Act or solid experience of assessing information in accordance with regulatory Acts.
• Analytical Problem Solving: Ability to use innovative thinking and analytical skills to gather, collate, analyse and respond to information.
• Investigation and Examination Skills: Ability to conduct investigations and examinations under direction within tight timeframes and in a sensitive environment.
• Report and Brief Preparation: Ability to compile and support the preparation of evidence-based reports and briefs of varying complexity, in consideration of legislation, criminal procedures and rules of evidence. Clear and concise written communication skills are highly regarded.
• Communication skills: Demonstrates high level, clear verbal and written communication skills, ensuring appropriate format, style and approach is taken to deliver best outcomes for the Inspectorate.

Qualifications/requirements

• Current Victorian Drivers Licence;
• Some out of hour's work will occasionally be required including overnight travel to regional Victoria;
• An appropriate tertiary qualification in the field of law, commerce or related discipline is highly regarded. Candidates with a Certificate IV in Government Investigations will also be highly rega rded. Demonstrated investigative experience is a requirement.
