1st to 3rd Year Fitter Machinist Apprenticeship

The Opportunity

In partnership with the University of Queensland, we are seeking a motivated Fitter Machinist Apprentice to join the team while undertaking a MEM30219 Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade.

This position is ideally suited to a first to third year apprentice.

This position is full-time and based in St Lucia.

Through the Advanced Prototyping Workshop at UQ, you will have the opportunity to work alongside skilled technical specialists, gaining practical experience with advanced manufacturing technologies, fabrication, machining, and prototyping processes.

Combining practical workshop exposure with expert mentoring, you will develop valuable skills in design realisation, precision manufacturing, problem-solving, and the operation of industry-standard equipment used to create cutting-edge research and engineering solutions.

Your duties will include:

• Operate manual lathes and milling machines to manufacture precision components
• Set up and operate CNC milling machines to produce high-quality prototypes and custom parts
• Perform general assembly and workshop fabrication activities to support research and engineering projects
• Read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, and design requirements
• Assist with the development and fabrication of prototypes using a range of advanced manufacturing techniques
• Undertake TIG and MIG welding tasks where skills and experience permit
• Maintain workshop equipment and ensure safe work practices are followed at all times

The successful candidate is approachable, enjoys working with others, and has a good sense of humour. They will possess strong communication skills, be proactive in their approach to work, and demonstrate a willingness to take initiative when supporting workshop projects.

They will be eager to learn, open to feedback, and keen to develop new skills in advanced prototyping and manufacturing technologies while contributing positively to a collaborative team environment.

In addition to these qualities, you will ideally:

• Some exposure to machining and workshop environments, including experience operating manual or automated machinery such as lathes and milling machines

• An interest in developing hands-on manufacturing and prototyping skills
• Have basic mechanical aptitude and a genuine interest in fitting and machining
• Be able to use basic hand tools and measuring equipment safely
• Demonstrate attention to detail and the ability to work accurately with precision equipment
• Have the ability to pass a Medical, Drug and Alcohol Screen, and Police Check
