Great Southern Grammar is strengthening its student wellbeing model for 2027 and invites applications from appropriately qualified youth mental health professionals who want to make a practical, sustained difference in a school community. 

The Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing Officer will provide visible, accessible and trauma-informed support to students in Years 7–12. The role adds specialist youth mental health capability to the Secondary pastoral team through timely response, brief evidence-informed support, coordinated case management and connection with families and community services. 

The opportunity 

• Build safe, respectful and developmentally appropriate relationships with students, including boarding students and students from diverse backgrounds. 
• Provide brief psychosocial support, counselling, psychoeducation, emotional-regulation and help-seeking strategies within professional scope. 
• Receive and prioritise referrals, coordinate agreed support and maintain continuity across internal and external services. 
• Respond appropriately to NSSI, suicidal ideation, acute distress and other significant wellbeing concerns, escalating under School protocols and never managing significant risk in isolation. 
• Develop trusted relationships with families and external services and maintain practical referral pathways across Albany and the Great Southern. 
• Provide consultation and trauma-informed guidance to pastoral leaders and staff and contribute to preventive education and wellbeing programs. 
• Maintain clear, timely and confidential records and work collaboratively within the School’s student-support framework. 

What you will bring 

• A relevant tertiary qualification in social work, psychology, counselling or psychotherapy, mental health nursing, occupational therapy, youth mental health or a closely related discipline. 
• Current professional registration, accreditation or membership where applicable. 
• Demonstrated adolescent mental health or psychosocial practice, including case coordination, family liaison, referral, safety planning, records and multidisciplinary collaboration. 
• Experience responding to NSSI, suicidal ideation, acute distress, anxiety, depression, trauma, school refusal or other complex youth wellbeing needs. 
• A warm, relatable and non-judgemental manner, clear boundaries, calm judgement and the capacity to escalate concerns promptly. 
• Current WWCC, satisfactory criminal history check, First Aid/CPR, Australian work rights and capacity to obtain relevant Mental Health First Aid instructor status if required. 

Reliable availability across each student day is central to the role. Flexible part-time arrangements may be considered where consistent daily access is maintained. 

Professional scope: This role does not replace external clinical, medical, psychological or emergency services. The appointee must work within qualifications, competence, School protocols and the approved scope of practice.
