The Role:

The Sarcoma Biobank and Research Officer role will support clinical and research teams at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and the Surgical Outcomes Research Centre - (SOuRCe) with (i) the preparation, processing and management of biological samples in a specialised cancer biobank; (ii) maintaining and updating clinical records and sample data in multiple sarcoma research databases. This is a full-time position.

Key activities include but are not limited to:

• Maintain and update clinical records in multiple sarcoma research databases
• Assist with requests for identification of research specimens in pathology databases and perform sample retrievals within required timeframes, and provide project and administrative support for research projects within the sarcoma biobank.
• Use microtome to prepare tumour sections from FFPE blocks according to defined protocols for biobanking, clinical trial screening and other approved research projects. Package and ship samples to local and national testing laboratories and research institutes.
• Provide a tumour collection and processing service for patients participating in sarcoma biobanking research and clinical trials, in liaison with the sarcoma anatomical pathology and clinical teams, and sarcoma research and clinical trial coordinators.
• Ensure biospecimens are annotated with current and accurate clinical data.
• General laboratory duties including monitoring stock levels, maintaining laboratory equipment and maintenance of records, reports and correspondence as required.
• Manage tissue testing kit inventory.

Essential Criteria: 

• Degree in Biomedical Science or Science.
• Experience working in a laboratory/research environment including the routine handling, storage and retrieval of biological samples (blood, fresh and paraffin embedded tissue).
• Proven strong organisational ability to set priorities and manage multiple deadlines.
• Knowledge of patient confidentiality and privacy requirements.
• Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated capacity to liaise with professionals across multiple disciplines.
• Self-motivated with the proven ability to work independently with minimal direction and collaboratively as part of a team to achieve shared goals.
• Highly developed analytical skills and problem solving skills.
• Attention to detail, accuracy in record keeping and commitment to quality.
• Demonstrated ability to follow strict protocols.
• High level computer skills, particularly with data collection and entry. Advanced Excel skills.

Desirable Criteria:

• Experience in the use of a microtome and the preparation of tissue slides from FFPE blocks.
• Experience in extracting clinical information from medical records for clinical databases
• Project management experience.
• Knowledge of medical terminology, including pharmaceuticals, pathology testing and cancer medicine, especially sarcoma.
