The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking an Industry Supervisor - Kitchen to provide a critical role within Corrections Victoria Prison Industries.
About the Business Unit
HM Prison Barwon is a maximum-security prison located 6km north-west of Lara, 20km from the centre of Geelong and about 70km from Melbourne, and is part of the Barwon South West Regional structure. It is Victoria's major maximum-security prison for sentenced male prisoners. The prison officially opened in January 1990 and currently houses up to 416 men in custody, including high security, long term management, protection (including specialist protection), general mainstream (maximum security) and medium security prisoners.
The Vocational Services Team consists of the three key portfolios, education, programs, and industries. The role of the team is to prepare prisoners for release and to enhance post release employment opportunities through prisoner employment, integrated on the job training, targeted educational opportunities, personal development programs and activities.
Prison Industry Supervisors are responsible for the management and delivery of specific functions within a production or service industry under the guidance of an Industry Manager. The role requires leadership, maturity, sound judgement, confidence in decision making, with developed capabilities to coach, mentor and motivate staff and prisoners. Highly developed communication, negotiation and problem-solving skills.
About the Role
The Industry Supervisor will assist with the management of prisoner employment, safe operating procedures and other OHS legislative requirements and compliance with prison industry procedures. The role is responsible for assisting with the operational aspects of prison production and service industries, to achieve commercial production targets and customer expectations, maintaining control of stock, materials, and financial records and providing an industry model of Trade training and assessing environment.
Industry Supervisors ensure industry staff under their supervision conduct searches, escorts, surveillance, observe and assess prisoner behaviour, correctly operate a variety of security and industrial equipment, collate information, and prepare and deliver performance reports. A prison Industry Supervisor plays an integral role in developing, implementing, reinforcing and reviewing practice and procedures relating to industry processes, offender management and security management.
As pa rt of a dynamic kitchen operation, this role requires flexibility to work across a rotating roster, including weekends and public holidays. Applicants should be comfortable working in a shift-based environment.
