The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking an Industry Supervisor - Kitchen to provide a critical role within Corrections Victoria Prison Industries.

About the Business Unit

HM Prison Barwon is a maximum-security prison located 6km north-west of Lara, 20km from the centre of Geelong and about 70km from Melbourne, and is part of the Barwon South West Regional structure.  It is Victoria's major maximum-security prison for sentenced male prisoners. The prison officially opened in January 1990 and currently houses up to 416 men in custody, including high security, long term management, protection (including specialist protection), general mainstream (maximum security) and medium security prisoners.

The Vocational Services Team consists of the three key portfolios, education, programs, and industries.  The role of the team is to prepare prisoners for release and to enhance post release employment opportunities through prisoner employment, integrated on the job training, targeted educational opportunities, personal development programs and activities. 

Prison Industry Supervisors are responsible for the management and delivery of specific functions within a production or service industry under the guidance of an Industry Manager. The role requires leadership, maturity, sound judgement, confidence in decision making, with developed capabilities to coach, mentor and motivate staff and prisoners. Highly developed communication, negotiation and problem-solving skills.

About the Role

The Industry Supervisor will assist with the management of prisoner employment, safe operating procedures and other OHS legislative requirements and compliance with prison industry procedures. The role is responsible for assisting with the operational aspects of prison production and service industries, to achieve commercial production targets and customer expectations, maintaining control of stock, materials, and financial records and providing an industry model of Trade training and assessing environment.

Industry Supervisors ensure industry staff under their supervision conduct searches, escorts, surveillance, observe and assess prisoner behaviour, correctly operate a variety of security and industrial equipment, collate information, and prepare and deliver performance reports.  A prison Industry Supervisor plays an integral role in developing, implementing, reinforcing and reviewing practice and procedures relating to industry processes, offender management and security management.

As pa rt of a dynamic kitchen operation, this role requires flexibility to work across a rotating roster, including weekends and public holidays. Applicants should be comfortable working in a shift-based environment.

Some of your duties will include:

• Supervise staff and prisoners to ensure achievement of operational aims of the industry. These include commercial production targets and customer expectations, ordering and maintaining control of stock, materials, financial records and providing an industry model-workplace training environment.
• Effectively manage all work areas to ensure the safety and security of prisoners, staff and visitors. This includes appropriate levels of surveillance and interaction within the facility, and monitoring staff and prisoners for compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety, and security procedures.
• Deliver performance management targets and undertake professional development as required to enhance the role as part of a staff team, with emphasis on following industry requirements for OH&S, quality assurance, monitoring, recording and record keeping systems of prison industry functional areas and recommending improvements where necessary.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

• Demonstrate a high level of leadership, maturity, sound judgement and confidence in decision making, with capabilities to coach, mentor and motivate staff and productively achieve dispute resolution, to achieve program outcomes in a multidisciplinary team and rehabilitative environment.
• Strong team-oriented mindset, with the ability to build effective working relationships and contribute both collaboratively and autonomously.
• Completion of appropriate trade qualifications or equivalent experience related to the needs of Barwon Prison and experience at training workers in relevant manufacturing areas.
• Ability to work effectively in a Correctional environment and demonstrated absence of a relevant offence history.

Qualifications/requirements

• A qualification or background in a recognised trade (e.g. kitchen operations), or relevant experience using associated tools or equipment, will be highly regarded.
• Experience within a commercial kitchen or similar operational environment is desirable.
• Experience or exposure to correctio nal industries or service areas is advantageous, but not essential.
• Successful completion of the Corrections Victoria Prison Officer Pre-Service Training Course, or a willingness and ability to undertake and complete the training, is required.
