News Editor - New Idea

As New Idea’s News Editor, you’ll be responsible for shaping and delivering high-impact, audience-first content across our print and digital platforms.

This role is perfect for a driven editor with exceptional editorial instincts, legal knowledge and a sharp understanding of content performance.

You’ll be expected to proactively pitch, commission, and produce original ideas; manage end-to-end workflows; write and edit flawless copy; plan ahead; and collaborate across departments – all to deadline.

The ideal candidate will have at least four years’ experience as a journalist on a magazine, newspaper or digital platform.

Duties

• Be fully immersed in the weekly news cycle and trending TV shows to inspire exciting, fresh and hard-hitting angles that resonate with our audience
• Write and edit stories in New Idea’s style and tone, for print and online
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure efficient and effective content delivery across platforms
• Source, script and create video content for news and crime stories that drives engagement across digital and social channels.
• Commission stories from freelance journalists

Skills and experience

• Solid journalism background, with experience commissioning, writing and editing high-quality long-form content.
• Excellent news sense and ability to identify resonant and relevant story angles.
• Deep understanding of issues that matter to everyday Australian women, audience behaviour, digital best practices and multi-platform publishing.
• Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, highly organised, with an eye for accuracy and detail   
• Ability to work independently while collaborating across large teams, work under pressure and to tight deadlines
• Confidence in using content management systems and workflow tools.
• Demonstrated project management and time management skills.
