Employment Opportunity

This is an ongoing opportunity for an EL2 to join the Office of Corporate Counsel within the People and Strategy Division and the Attorney-General’s Department.

This role will have a particular focus on supporting the department’s implementation and management of the Identity Verification Service (IVS). This will draw on your background and experience in advising on legislative frameworks, information management, statutory interpretation, inter-government agreements, contracts and public law and the intersection between legal principles and technology in the context of this important government program.

How you can make a difference

Our ideal candidate will:

• Be a high performing EL2 officer, at level or an experienced EL1 seeking an acting opportunity
• Deliver high-quality legal services to clients within the Attorney-General’s Department
• Have strong Commonwealth legal experience, either from working in a Commonwealth agency’s in-house legal team or with AGS, or at a private firm with a focus on advising Commonwealth agencies
• Have prior knowledge and experience in advising on information and data management, administrative law, statutory interpretation and/or inter-governmental arrangements
• Have experience in advising on legal issues associated with technology platforms, cloud computing services, IT systems and/or cyber security
• Develop and maintain high level professional relationships, including by approaching conversations with a strong grasp of key issues and anticipating stakeholder perspectives and needs
• Engage in business and workforce planning and develop organisational strategy to deliver successful outcomes
• Be able to work collaboratively and constructively and engage directly with senior personnel across the department.

This position requires formal legal qualifications. Applicants must hold a degree in law from an Australian tertiary institution or admission in Australia as a legal practitioner.

Other qualifications:

Entry in the Register of Practitioners of the High Court of Australia or the roll of barristers and solicitors of the Supreme Court of a State or Territory 

To be eligible for employment at the Attorney-General’s Department applicants must be Australian citizens.  

Applicants offered employment will be required to successfully undergo a police record check and be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at a specified clearance level. The successful applicant must be willing to disclose all relevant and required information. 

Successful applicants engaged into the APS will be subject to a probation period. 

A merit pool of suitable applicants may be created from this process, and will be active for 18 months after the date of this gazettal.
