About the role
We seek a part-time (2-3 days per week) Respiratory and Sleep Scientist to help operate our service. The Scientist is responsible for providing high-quality respiratory and sleep diagnostic testing services to patients referred to the practice. The role involves performing, monitoring and accurately interpreting the technical quality of a range of pulmonary function tests, as well as setting up and instructing patients in the use of home sleep study equipment. The Respiratory Scientist is expected to provide a professional, patient-centred service while maintaining high standards of technical quality, infection control, documentation and equipment management.
Key responsibilities
Perform spirometry, including bronchodilator responsiveness testing where indicated
Perform lung volume measurements
Perform diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO) testing
Perform exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) testing
Perform bronchial challenge testing
Perform respiratory oscillometry / forced oscillation technique (FOT)
Perform maximum inspiratory and expiratory pressures (MIP/MEP) testing
Perform six-minute walk tests (6MWT)
Perform home sleep study set-ups, including explaining procedures, preparing and issuing equipment, checking returned equipment and downloading study data
Prepare studies for physician review and reporting and maintain appropriate records of equipment issue, return and study completion
About you
Relevant qualification in respiratory science, clinical physiology or a related discipline
Demonstrated experience in pulmonary function testing
Competence in spirometry and other routine pulmonary function investigations
Strong attention to detail and commitment to test quality
Good interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively to a multidisciplinary team
Ability to recognise technical and clinical issues requiring escalation
Commitment to patient safety, confidentiality and professional standards
