Lead School Psychologist

This is a 12 month fixed term, part-time (0.7FTE) position commencing October 2026 with possible extension and/or permanency

As a Lead School Psychologist in South Metropolitan Education Region you will be part of a self-directed, collaborative team and directly accountable to the Director of Education. You will also be professionally accountable to the Chief Psychologist. Your practice will be guided and directed by Departmental policies and guidelines and the Psychology Board of Australia’s professional standards.

There are over 286 public schools located in the South Metropolitan Education Region, which encapsulates an area from the City of Fremantle, along the Swan River to the City of Belmont, extending to the eastern most point of the City of Armadale and south to the Shire of Waroona. It essentially covers the southern side of the Perth metropolitan area and is the largest education region by student enrolments. The Role

In this role, you will be responsible for providing leadership and access to professional support and learning for all School Psychologists, including ensuring professional supervision for provisionally registered psychologists. The position assures the quality of all School Psychologists’ practice meets the professional standards of the Department and the Psychology Board of Australia and leads in the provision of contemporary psychological practices. Broad experience and capacity to provide leadership across all core areas of service delivery (mental health and well-being, learning, behaviour, incident management and disability) will be required.

The suitable applicant will ensure effective deployment of School Psychologists and access to specialist school psychology resources as well as provide direct consultation to the Director of Schools, Principals and the system in the assessment and response to complex issues and situations, including incident management. You will also provide leadership in the development and implementation of appropriate programs, interventions, and evaluations at all levels, including facilitation of systemic change and provide critical evaluation on issues impacting on the School Psychology Service. 

The suitable applicant will also demonstrate their ability to actively contribute to the South Metro regional priorities, including cultural responsiveness, disability and inclusion, incident management and behaviour and well-being. These priorities will be driven through effective collaboration with the broader LSP team and regional office staff.

As the suitable applicant, you will be responsible for providing strategic leadership to ensure high-quality practice and continuous professional growth among psychologists at all career stages—from Advanced Skills School Psychologists (ASSPs) and Senior Psychologists to provisionally registered and newly appointed staff within the Department of Education. The region supports an ongoing number of provisionally registered psychologists requiring Lead School Psychologists to play a critical role in the supervision process.

Employees are required to have achieved Advanced Skills School Psychologist status for permanent appointment to this position.
