We are seeking a reliable, hands-on Trades Assistant to join our Darlington Workshop team. This is a diverse role suited to someone who enjoys variety, takes pride in maintaining a well-organised work environment and is willing to get involved wherever needed to support our mechanics, boilermakers and workshop operations.
About the Role
This is a versatile position that combines workshop support, yard maintenance, stores assistance, vehicle movements and general mechanical trades assistance.
Working closely with our Workshop Supervisors, Mechanics and Tradespeople, you will help keep workshop operations running efficiently by taking ownership of a variety of support tasks that allow our skilled tradespeople to focus on critical maintenance and repair activities.
Key Responsibilities
Assist mechanics and tradespeople with servicing, repairs and maintenance activities
Wash and clean plant and equipment prior to repairs, servicing or mobilisation
Prepare machines for sale, including removal of accessories, decals and equipment
Clean, detail and prepare light vehicles for redeployment to projects
Conduct general workshop and yard housekeeping duties
Organise materials, equipment and workshop storage areas
Unload and store steel deliveries using forklifts, cranes and lifting equipment
Operate forklifts and overhead cranes to support workshop activities
Act as a spotter for elevated work platform and scissor lift operations
Deliver parts and equipment to local suppliers, workshops and project sites
Complete vehicle drop-offs and collections with external suppliers and service providers
Provide relief support for stores and courier functions during leave and absences
Assist with lifting equipment, fire extinguisher, jacking equipment and workshop compliance registers
Support test and tag activities and equipment inspections where appropriately trained
Coordinate tyre, wheel alignment and vehicle maintenance bookings
Provide additional labour support for local site-based maintenance work
Assist with workshop logistics, freight unloading and mobilisation activities
About You
To be successful in this role, you will be:
Self-motivated and proactive
Comfortable working both independently and as part of a team
Safety focused with strong attention to detail
Able to manage a variety of tasks and changing priorities
Physically fit and capable of performing manual handling duties
A strong communicator with a positive attitude and willingness to help
Desired Skills & Experience
Previous experience as a Trades Assistant, Yard Hand, Workshop Assistant or similar role
Basic mechanical aptitude and understanding of heavy equipment, trucks or mobile plant
Current C Class Driver's Licence
Forklift Licence (Highly Desirable)
Overhead Crane experience (Desirable)
Dogging or Rigging tickets (Advantageous)
Elevated Work Platform experience (Advantageous)
Test & Tag qualification or willingness to obtain (Advantageous)
Strong commitment to safety and workplace procedures
