The RoleFire Rescue Victoria (FRV) is seeking a qualified and experienced Diesel Mechanic to join our Mechanical Engineering Workshop team at Thornbury.
You will be part of an experienced, multi-skilled workshop team whose work directly supports Victoria’s frontline firefighters and emergency response capability.
No two days are alike, so this is not your typical heavy-vehicle workshop role. You will work across a diverse and highly specialised fleet, undertaking scheduled servicing, preventative maintenance, fault diagnosis and repairs, vehicle assessments and road testing, as well as supporting breakdown response and emergency field service repairs when required.
Functional Accountabilities:· Performing scheduled servicing, preventative maintenance and repairs on fire appliances, heavy vehicles and associated equipment· Diagnosing and rectifying mechanical faults and breakdowns· Undertaking vehicle inspections and assessments, including road testing· Carrying out modifications and repairs to specialist appliances and equipment· Providing field service and breakdown support, including attendance at firegrounds and major incidents when required· Working collaboratively with other trades, Team Leaders, Supervisors and specialist areas across FRV· Completing required workshop and maintenance documentation· Maintaining high standards of occupational health and safety, quality and workmanship· Participating in technical training, skills development and continuous improvement activities

You will work on vehicles and equipment rarely encountered in a conventional workshop, develop specialist technical skills and be part of a team responsible for keeping FRV’s fire appliances safe, reliable and ready to respond.

What you will need to SucceedTo be successful in this position, you must have:A recognised Diesel Mechanic/Heavy Vehicle Mechanic trade qualificationSubstantial experience in diesel and heavy-vehicle servicing, fault diagnosis and repairStrong mechanical fault-finding and problem-solving skillsA commitment to high-quality workmanshipA strong commitment to occupational health and safetyThe ability to work effectively as part of a multi-skilled workshop teamGood communication and interpersonal skillsA willingness to undertake specialist training and develop additional competencies relevant to FRV’s fleet.
A current Victorian Heavy Rigid (HR) driver licence is highly regarded.Where additional licensing, training or recertification is required to enable an employee to perform their duties, FRV provides support in accordance with the applicable Enterprise Agreement.
Experience working on fire appliances, emergency-service vehicles or other specialist heavy vehicles is advantageous but not essential.
