Early Childhood Teacher

As an Early Childhood Teacher at Bright Beginners Early Learning Centre, you will be responsible for: Plan and structure learning experiences in both indoor and outdoor environments, using a variety of age-appropriate materials, resources and equipment to support children’s learning, development and engagement.

Plan, implement and evaluate play-based educational programs that encourage exploration, curiosity, creativity, problem-solving and meaningful engagement, in accordance with the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) and relevant legislative and regulatory requirements. Provide a variety of experiences and activities designed to develop children’s motor skills, cooperative social skills, confidence, independence, communication, understanding and overall development.

Promote language and communication development through storytelling, role play, songs, rhymes, informal discussions and conversations conducted both individually and within groups. Create a nurturing, inclusive and stimulating learning environment that supports children to develop a strong sense of identity, wellbeing, confidence, communication skills and connection with their world. Observe children regularly to assess and evaluate their progress, development, interests and individual needs, and identify signs of ill health, emotional disturbance, developmental concerns or other disabilities that may require further attention or support.

Observe and monitor children’s nutritional health, welfare, wellbeing and safety needs, and identify factors that may affect or impede their learning, development or progress. Document, assess and evaluate children’s learning and development through observations, learning stories, portfolios, photographs, digital documentation and other appropriate methods, using these observations to inform future planning and individualised support. Develop and adapt educational programs to respond to children’s individual strengths, interests, abilities, developmental needs and cultural backgrounds.

Support children with additional needs or disabilities by providing appropriate adjustments and inclusive learning opportunities, and work collaboratively with families, educators and relevant professionals where required. Build positive, respectful and nurturing relationships with children and promote their agency by encouraging them to express their ideas, make choices, participate in decision-making and take an active role in their learning and play. Promote positive behaviour, cooperation, empathy and self-regulation through intentional teaching, role modelling and supportive interactions.

Monitor children’s health, wellbeing and safety and maintain appropriate supervision at all times, including during indoor and outdoor activities, transitions, excursions and emergency situations. Follow child protection, child safety, health and safety, risk management, emergency, medication, hygiene and other Service policies, procedures and legislative requirements. Maintain a safe, supportive and stimulating physical environment and ensure learning materials, resources and equipment are safe, suitable, well maintained and appropriate for children’s use.

Identify and report hazards, maintenance issues, incidents, risks or other concerns relating to the learning environment and contribute to risk management and continuous improvement activities. Discuss children’s progress, development, learning, wellbeing and individual needs with parents and families and maintain open, respectful and professional communication. Build collaborative partnerships with families and encourage their participation in the Service’s educational programs, activities, events and decision-making processes.

Attend and participate in parent interviews, staff meetings, committee meetings, family meetings and other meetings relevant to the role. Participate in community and family support programs, community activities and relevant support initiatives as appropriate to promote positive outcomes for children and families. Work collaboratively with the Educational Leader, Room Leader and other educators to plan, implement, document and evaluate educational programs and contribute to continuous improvement.

Contribute to the Service’s Quality Improvement Plan (QIP), reflective practice, self-assessment, assessment and rating processes and other quality improvement initiatives. Stay informed about current early childhood education practices, research, sector developments and contemporary approaches to child development, and apply this knowledge to educational planning and practice. Promote inclusive and culturally safe practices and ensure all children, regardless of their ability, background, culture or language, feel welcomed, supported and valued.

Monitor and support children’s nutritional, dietary, allergy, medical and other specific requirements in accordance with Service policies and relevant legislation. Maintain accurate, timely and confidential records relating to children’s learning, development, health, attendance, incidents, observations and other relevant matters. Participate in professional development, training and other learning opportunities to maintain and strengthen professional knowledge and teaching practice.

Supervise, guide and support student teachers undertaking professional placements at the Service, providing appropriate assistance and feedback in accordance with Service requirements. Work collaboratively with colleagues, families, community organisations and relevant professionals to support children’s learning, development, health and wellbeing. Promote environmentally responsible practices and incorporate sustainability into daily routines, learning experiences and the educational environment.

Attend to other duties within the scope of the Early Childhood Teacher role as reasonably directed by the Room Leader, Educational Leader or Director/Nominated Supervisor.
