HR Officer

About the role

We're seeking a proactive, hands-on Part Time HR Officer to join our team 3 days per week. Reporting to Senior Management, you'll be the go-to person for all things people-related — from recruiting new talent to keeping our policies, compliance, and employee relations running smoothly. This is a broad generalist role, ideal for someone who enjoys variety and wants genuine ownership of the HR function in a growing business.

Key responsibilities

• Manage end-to-end recruitment: writing ads, screening candidates, coordinating interviews, and extending offers

• Coordinate pre-employment checks (working rights, licences, tickets/certifications relevant to shipyard work)

• Design and deliver a smooth onboarding and induction experience for new starters, including site inductions

• Act as a trusted first point of contact for staff and managers on day-to-day HR matters

• Support performance management, grievance handling, and conflict resolution

• Help foster a positive, safety-first workplace culture

• Maintain and update HR policies and procedures to keep pace with legislation and business needs

• Support Work Health & Safety (WHS) compliance in a shipyard/industrial environment, including incident documentation and training records

• Ensure compliance with the Fair Work Act, relevant Awards, and other employment obligations

• Support payroll processing and liaise with finance on pay, leave, and entitlement queries

About you

• Proven experience in a generalist HR role, ideally within construction, marine, manufacturing, or another trades-based/industrial environment

• Solid working knowledge of Australian employment law, the Fair Work Act, and relevant Modern Awards

• Practical understanding of WHS obligations and experience supporting safety compliance

• Confident handling recruitment end-to-end, from sourcing through to onboarding

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the judgement to handle sensitive matters discreetly

• Highly organised, with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities across 3 days a week

• Tertiary qualification in Human Resources, Business, or a related field (desirable but not essential with strong relevant experience)

• Experience with payroll systems and HR/HRIS software is a plus
