The Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service covers a large geographic area with a diverse and growing population. The Health Service provides a wide range of primary care, acute and specialist services.

Cairns Hospital is the largest major hospital in Far North Queensland, caring for patients from the Mossman/Port Douglas to Tully in the south and out to Croydon in the west.
The Surgical Orthopaedic Assessment Unit (SOAU) aims to enhance the patient journey of surgical and orthopaedic patients within the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service by facilitating rapid assessment, early initiation of care and treatment, and identifying appropriate placement of inpatients within the surgical and orthopaedic wards.
Core business of the Surgical Orthopaedic Assessment Unit (SOAU) is to provide excellence in multidisciplinary Surgical and Orthopaedic care to in scope patients requiring assessment, treatment, and minor procedures.
