About the role
There are bookkeeping roles where you’re handed a pile of transactions and told to work through them.
This isn’t one of those roles.
Our client is a growing Australian technology business that needs an experienced Bookkeeper who can come in, understand how the finance function operates, take ownership of the detail and simply make sure things are done properly.
The role sits close to the CFO and covers the financial rhythm of the business from payroll and reconciliations through to BAS, PAYG, payroll tax, month-end, reporting, budgeting and forecasting.
It’s hands-on, but it isn’t junior.
You’ll need to be someone who can look at the numbers, spot when something doesn’t quite add up, investigate it and keep things moving without waiting to be told what to do next.
The shape of the role
This is a genuine part-time opportunity, likely around 2 to 3 days per week.
Some weeks may be a little heavier around month-end, projects or other busy periods, so there is flexibility around how the role is structured.
The business is based in Melbourne CBD and would ideally love someone who can work in a hybrid way and spend some time with the team.
But they also know the right Bookkeeper may not be sitting five kilometres from the office. For someone who is experienced, reliable and genuinely self-sufficient, they are open to fully remote.
What you’ll own
You’ll work closely with the CFO and take responsibility for the day-to-day finance operations of the business. That includes:Managing bookkeeping and maintaining accurate records in XeroPayroll processing and payroll reconciliationsSuperannuation and Single Touch PayrollBAS and IAS preparation and lodgementPAYG and payroll taxBank, credit card and general ledger reconciliationsAccounts payable and supplier paymentsAccounts receivable, invoicing and collectionsSupporting an accurate and timely month-end closeMaintaining the general ledger and making sure transactions are correctly recordedPreparing management reportingSupporting cash flow reporting and planningAssisting with budgeting and forecastingPreparing budget-to-actual and variance reportingSupporting finance projects as they ariseHelping improve processes, controls and automation as the business grows
The role builds on an existing finance operations remit that already includes payroll, statutory compliance, Xero, reconciliations, reporting and process improvement.
The person we’re hoping to find
You’ve probably been doing this long enough that you don’t need a checklist for every month-end. You know what needs to happen, when it needs to happen and what good looks like. You’re comfortable working across payroll, BAS, GST, PAYG, payroll tax and reconciliations, and you’re equally happy getting into the detail as you are preparing information for a CFO.
You’ll ideally bring:Strong hands-on bookkeeping experience within an Australian businessExcellent Xero experienceStrong Australian payroll knowledgeConfidence across BAS, GST, PAYG, payroll tax, superannuation and STPExperience managing month-end reconciliations and supporting closeConfidence across AP and ARExperience preparing management reportsExposure to budgeting, forecasting and cash flowStrong attention to detailGood judgement and problem-solving abilityThe confidence to work independently and take ownership of your workFull Australian working rights
Experience within technology, SaaS, professional services or another growing SME environment would be useful, but it isn’t essential.
Why this one is worth a look
The flexibility is genuine. So is the responsibility.
You’re not being brought in to sit quietly in the background processing invoices. You’ll be trusted to own the work, partner closely with the CFO and help keep the financial foundations of the business strong as it continues to grow.
For someone who wants meaningful part-time work, plenty of autonomy and a role where experience is genuinely valued, this could be a really good fit.
