Based in our Katanning office and reporting to the Editor (Great Southern), this is a unique and exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic journalist to join The West Australian’s Great Southern team.

You will be the primary reporter for the Great Southern Herald and Narrogin Observer, weekly publications serving the communities of the Great Southern and Wheatbelt and are among the four mastheads that make up SWM’s Great Southern regional newspapers.

In this role, you will be responsible for delivering original news stories for print and online publication that reflect the wider interests of the people of the Great Southern and Wheatbelt . As the papers primary reporter, you’ll cover all aspects of news in those rural communities, including courts, crime, council, agriculture, health, arts and culture, politics, special features, community, and sport.

Reporting to the Editor (Great Southern), your key responsibilities will include:

Consistently delivering accurate, engaging copy to strict deadlinesCovering breaking news stories across a broad range of areasPitching agenda-setting exclusive story ideas to the EditorBuilding and maintaining excellent contacts across the communityInterviewing and photographing subjects confidently and professionallyRepresenting the company in a professional and courteous manner
