Studio Schools of Australia (SSA) was established in 2019 to deliver a ground‑breaking new model of Indigenous secondary education for students in remote communities across northern Australia. SSA’s model is built on proven evidence of what works for Indigenous students, their families and communities, combining personal and social development, academic learning, and a jobs‑ready approach with a central focus on Indigenous identity and culture. SSA is now in a consolidation stage, focusing on the effective and sustainable operation of its two schools – Yiramalay Studio School and Manjali Studio School.

SSA’s mission is to enable Indigenous students to lead their own advancement and to take a valuable and meaningful place in their own communities and within Australia.

Overview

The primary role of the Chef is to provide adequate, healthy, and culturally appropriate meals to all students, staff, and visitors whilst at the School. This is a live-in position on campus, requiring a hands-on approach to kitchen operations and pastoral care within the school community.

The position reports to the Catering Manager.

• Key Responsibilities
• Menu Planning and Food Preparation
• ·Plan and prepare nutritious, balanced, and appealing menus that cater to the dietary needs of students, staff, and guests, considering cultural preferences and the unique context of a remote boarding school.
• ·Ensure all food provided is safe and suitable for human consumption, complying with the requirements of the “Food Act WA 2008” and the “Victorian Food Act 1984.”
• ·Manage food ordering, stock control, and inventory to minimise waste and ensure efficient use of resources.
• ·Accommodate special dietary requirements, including allergies, intolerances, and medical or cultural dietary needs, in accordance with accepted School guidelines.
• Kitchen and Residence Management
• ·Maintain high standards of tidiness, cleanliness, and hygiene in the kitchen, food storage areas, and associated residences.
• ·Oversee the day-to-day operations of the kitchen, ensuring all equipment is used safely and maintained in good working order.
• ·Report any areas needing maintenance or repairs to the Catering Manager promptly.
• ·Participate in audit preparation and demonstrate best practice compliance in all aspects of the role.
• Student and Community Engagement
• ·Build trusting and respectful relationships with students and staff through quality interactions, particularly during meal times.
• ·Demonstrate flexibility in assisting with unscheduled tasks that need immediate attention regarding food and pastoral issues.
• ·Contribute to a positive and welcoming environment that supports the wellbeing of all students.
• Health, Safety, and Compliance
• ·Ensure all work is performed in a safe manner and in accordance with relevant health and safety procedures.
• ·Identify and report hazards, assist in risk assessments, and maintain a clean, hazard-free environment.
• ·Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure safe operation of kitchen tools and machinery.
• ·Maintain a sound understanding of Mandatory Reporting for Child Abuse in WA and uphold a strong commitment to child safety and protection.
• ·Support emergency preparedness and assist with safety drills or procedures as required.

Skills and Capabilities

·Proven experience in commercial cooking or catering, with the ability to effectively operate a busy kitchen.

·A demonstrated understanding of the needs of this unique program, including experience with adolescent behaviour and needs, and the ability to establish appropriate relationships with young people.

·Understanding of Aboriginal culture and a respectful approach to working with Aboriginal teenagers and their communities.

·A current Certificate in Food Handling (or equivalent) and a sound understanding of the “Food Act WA 2008.”

·Self-motivated with a strong work ethic, including reliability, dependability, and the ability to work independently.

·Strong communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills.

·Current WA Working with Children Check (WWCC) and National Police Certificate (NPC).

·Current First Aid Certificate and Anaphylaxis training.

·Valid Driver’s Licence.

·A strong belief in child safety and protection, and a willingness to be actively engaged in the School’s child safe culture.
