About the role
The University of Tasmania acknowledges the palawa/pakana and Gadigal/Wangal people as the traditional custodians of the land, sea and waters of the areas upon which we live and work. We recognise their valuable contributions and deep connection to country and pay respect to Elders past and present.
About the opportunity
Join a team working at the forefront of fisheries science in our Modelling Program. One of your first roles will be to help rebuild one of Tasmania's most significant and highly valued recreational scalefish fisheries. This role offers a unique opportunity to apply cutting-edge quantitative approaches to a high-profile fisheries recovery program that will directly inform management and conservation outcomes. The successful applicant will lead the development and application of advanced stock assessment models, with a particular focus on Management Strategy Evaluation (MSE) and length-based equilibrium modelling for Sand Flathead. These models will underpin stock assessments and evaluate management scenarios designed to achieve rapid recovery to agreed biological reference points. Working closely with collaborators from the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania, the position will also contribute to the development of a contemporary harvest strategy for the fishery. The role will evolve into developing stock assessment models for a range of different species, supporting the development of harvest strategies for the management of Tasmania’s marine resources.
