REFOCUS is seeking a Kinship Assessment Practitioner (Equipping Kin) to join our team and support prospective kinship carers through assessment, preparation, and approval processes.

This role works within the Equipping Kin service and plays a vital role in ensuring children and young people requiring out-of-home care are placed with safe, stable, and nurturing kinship carers. The position works collaboratively with Child Safety, Connecting Kin Practitioners , and internal teams to support timely assessments and successful transitions into ongoing support services.

About the role

As a Kinship Assessment Practitioner, you will:

• Undertake comprehensive assessments of prospective kinship carers
• Conduct assessment interviews using approved assessment frameworks
• Complete household safety assessments and provide guidance on safety requirements
• Prepare prospective carers for their statutory caring responsibilities
• Deliver orientation and education regarding legislation, policies, and practice expectations
• Support carers to understand trauma-informed care, attachment, and child development
• Prepare high-quality, evidence-based assessment reports
• Make professional recommendations regarding kinship carer approval
• Work collaboratively with Child Safety Officers and community stakeholders
• Promote culturally safe, child-centred practice and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Placement Principle
• Maintain accurate case records and ensure compliance with legislative and organisational requirements

Strong assessment skills, professional judgement, cultural capability, and a commitment to child safety are essential to this role.

Pay and conditions

Permanent part-time position

Hourly pay rates range from:

Level 1 PPT3 $30.90 per hour, up to Level 3 PPT4 $52.93 per hour

Classification level and pay rate are assessed and determined based on qualifications, experience, and demonstrated capability.

• Is organised, accountable, and able to manage competing priorities effectively

Qualifications and experience

• Qualification in Social Work, Human Services, Behavioural Science, Community Services, or a related discipline
• Experience undertaking assessments within child protection, out-of-home care, or related human services
• Demonstrated report-writing and assessment skills
• Knowledge of child development, attachment, and trauma-informed practice
• Experience undertaking kinship or foster carer assessments will be highly regarded
• Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families is highly desirable

Training and support

• Current Blue Card (Working with Children Check)
• Current Queensland Driver Licence
• Current Disability Worker Screening Clearance (where required)
• Ability to meet REFOCUS compliance and reporting requirements
• Ability to work within the 10 Child Safe Standards
