About the role

The Music Leader – Junior School is an orchestral strings specialist responsible for the leadership, management and delivery of the Junior School Music Program from ELC to Year 6, including oversight of the Junior School Strings Program.

The role provides strategic and operational leadership across curriculum, instrumental music, ensembles, performances and co-curricular music programs, ensuring a vibrant and engaging music experience for all Junior School students. Working collaboratively with staff, students and families, the Music Leader – Junior School drives the ongoing development and excellence of music learning and performance opportunities across the Junior School.

A part-time load of 0.8FTE may be considered

Key duties:

• In collaboration with the Director of Music, lead and continue to develop a vibrant classroom and co-curricular Music Program in the Junior School

• Oversee the management of Junior Classroom Music and Instrumental Program staff to ensure that the Instrumental Programs contain best practice pedagogy that successfully integrates into Classroom Music Curriculum

• Teach curriculum music classes and contribute to the planning, assessment and design of curriculum music
• Lead and coordinate all components of the Junior Strings Program, including P-6 strings-based ensembles and the Years 2&3 Strings Program
• Actively participate and contribute to Music Staff meetings and strategic planning activities

• Undertake a collaborative role with the Director of Music and key staff in the planning and implementing of major concerts which include Junior School children

• Teach collaboratively within the Junior Classroom Music and Junior Strings Programs, demonstrating and sharing best practice pedagogy and assessment strategies
• Conduct and Tutor within the School’s Ensemble Program

The successful applicant will have:

• VIT registration
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience in managing and developing Junior School Music Programs, both curricular and co-curricular
• Demonstrated experience as a teacher of music within a Kodály or Orff framework 
• Demonstrated proficiency as an orchestral strings specialist
• Excellent conducting skills 
• Demonstrated ability to lead singing-based rehearsals, including year-level choirs
• Demonstrated ability to lead a team of people 
• Highly developed organisational and communication skills
• Demonstrated keyboard skills are an advantage
• Highly developed interpersonal skills and an ability to work with students from a wide range of backgrounds and differing levels of ability
