About the role

The Mental Health Alcohol and Other Drug (MHAOD) Branch of the Justice Health and Wellbeing Service delivers mental health and alcohol and other drug healthcare to some of the most vulnerable and high-risk individuals in the state.

The MHAOD Clinical Nurse Manager is responsible for leading and managing MHAOD Nursing team, to deliver evidence-based care to achieve optimal patient outcomes within allocated resources. The MHAOD Clinical Nurse Manager has direct responsibility for improving and maintaining standards, developing solutions, and delivering outcomes consistent with service and organisational goals.

The MHAOD Clinical Nurse Manager will be responsible for delivering an expanded specialty clinical practice role, which may include, but is not limited to:

• Knowledge within the specialised area of a secondary stream of MHAOD practice, with particular knowledge of care and management of dual diagnosis, which influences the outcomes of nursing both within the unit and external to the immediate area.
• Being a resource for other RN Level 1 and 2 and SRN Levels 1, 2 and 3 and other clinical and custodial staff particularly as adviser, mentor and in identifying education needs for contemporary mental health, alcohol and other drug service delivery.

Suitability Requirements

Through the recruitment process, we will be looking for a candidate who can demonstrate skills, experience and attributes in relation to the following:

Strategic Leadership & Advocacy

• Senior Management Participation: Contribute actively as a member of the senior management team to shape service direction.
• Stakeholder Collaboration: Represent the Mental Health and Alcohol and Other Drugs (MHAOD) service by communicating and collaborating with custodial staff.
• Patient Advocacy: Negotiate and advocate for patients presenting with complex, co-occurring mental health conditions.

Advanced Clinical Care Coordination

• Complex Care Delivery: Facilitate advanced and complex patient care within the specialised MHAOD portfolio at the Prison Health Service level.
• Interdisciplinary Partnerships: Work collaboratively alongside interdisciplinary team members and external service providers to deliver integrated care.

Team Management & Governance

• Autonomous Leadership: Demonstrate the ability to work autonomously and effectively lead a multidisciplinary team.
• Monitoring & Evaluation: Establish robust monitoring and evaluation processes to report service outcomes directly to executive and leadership roles.

Quality Improvement & Risk Management

• Service-Wide Strategies: Initiate and participate in the development of formal nursing quality improvement and risk management strategies.
• Clinical Standards Development: Drive standards relating to the delivery of recovery-based, trauma-informed care for patients with co-occurring mental illness and AOD diagnoses.

Eligibility

Permanent positions

• To be eligible for appointment to permanent positions in the West Australian Public Sector you must be an Australian citizen or have permanent resident status in Australia.

Qualifications

• Current registration in the category of Registered Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (APHRA)

• Authorised Mental Health Practitioner or working towards

• Relevant post graduate qualification in mental health, alcohol and other drugs and/or extensive clinical experience in and mental health and drug dependencies. Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to comply with the legislation and standards relevant to the care of people with mental illness.
