About the role
The Australian Dictionary of Biography (ADB), based at the National Centre of Biography within the School of History at ANU, is Australia's leading biographical reference work and a world leader in digital biography. The Research Editor contributes to the research, verification, and editing of biographical entries for the ADB’s print and digital publications, ensuring quality, accuracy, integrity, and coherence. Working collaboratively with authors, editors, and researchers, the role undertakes historical and bibliographical research, supports online content development, and contributes to editorial projects including thematic essays and corrigenda. The Research Editor also provides project and administrative support to the ADB team, including stakeholder communications, meetings, events, and publication workflows.
The Person
The successful candidate will have strong research, writing, editing, and digital skills, with experience in research or research support activities. They will possess relevant qualifications or demonstrated experience in a related discipline, with an interest in Australian history or a similar field. The candidate will demonstrate advanced research, editing, and online information skills, excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, and the capacity to collaborate with diverse stakeholders. Strong organisational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage competing priorities are essential. Experience with information systems and a commitment to equal opportunity principles in a university environment are also required.
The School/Department
The ANU School of History is Australia's top-ranked history department, known for its location in Canberra, which offers unparalleled access to national institutions. It features globally recognized research hubs—the National Centre of Biography, the National Centre for Indigenous History, and the Centre for Environmental History—and offers extensive undergraduate majors and postgraduate degrees. The National Centre of Biography hosts the Australian Dictionary of Biography.
The College/Division
The ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) is one of seven Colleges at ANU. The College, which is structured into two main research schools, offers degrees in more than 20 discipline areas and excels in research across the creative arts, humanities and social sciences. The College has a substantial international research presence and is a major source of national policy advice.
