Remote Area Nurse (Midwife)

Laynhapuy Homelands Aboriginal Corporation (Laynha) is looking for a compassionate, capable and community-minded Registered Nurse (Midwife) to join our Health Services team.

This is an opportunity to step away from a traditional clinical setting and work alongside Yolŋu communities across the Laynhapuy Homelands, delivering culturally appropriate primary health care and supporting people to make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing.

About Us

For more than 40 years, Laynhapuy Homelands Aboriginal Corporation has supported Yolŋu people living across approximately 30 homelands in East Arnhem Land.

Our Health Services team delivers primary health care across the Homelands, working alongside Community Health Workers and other health professionals to support the health and wellbeing of Yolŋu on Country.

About the Role

You’ll provide primary health care across the Laynhapuy Homelands, working both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Your days will be varied and may include:

• Providing primary health care and coordinating care for clients, including people living with chronic disease.
• Responding to accidents and emergencies in accordance with established procedures and protocols.
• Supporting child and maternal health, aged care, chronic disease management and other areas based on your skills and interests.
• Working within CARPA guidelines, established clinical protocols and medical direction.
• Building strong, respectful relationships with Yolŋu clients, families and communities.
• Supporting Community Health Workers through mentoring, professional development and capacity building.
• Maintaining accurate client records and health information.
• Contributing to clinical governance, quality improvement and accreditation activities.
• Developing relationships with external health providers and services to support community health outcomes.

The role involves regular travel to the Homelands, including a minimum of five days and one overnight trip per fortnight.

About You

You’ll be a qualified and registered nurse and/or midwife who brings:

• Current AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse and/or Registered Midwife.
• Experience delivering community-based primary health care.
• Experience working in remote or cross-cultural settings, or a strong willingness to learn.
• Competence in remote accident and emergency procedures.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with people from non-English-speaking backgrounds.
• The ability to work confidently both independently and as part of a team.
• Strong record keeping and administrative skills.
• A compassionate, respectful and culturally responsive approach to health care.
• A current open manual driver’s licence.
• Current BLS certification (ALS preferred).
• The ability to travel by 4WD and light aircraft and undertake overnight camping in remote locations.

Experience working in an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service or Indigenous community setting will be highly regarded.
