About the RoleReporting to the Head of Department, Molecular Genetics, you will provide senior scientific and clinical leadership across all aspects of molecular genetic testing and reporting.You will oversee laboratory operations, variant interpretation, quality systems and scientific decision-making while working closely with clinicians, genetic counsellors and pathology leaders to support exceptional patient outcomes.This position plays a key role in ensuring our genomic services remain scientifically robust, clinically relevant and responsive to advances in technology and best practice.
Key areas of responsibility include:Scientific LeadershipProvide scientific oversight across molecular genetic testing workflowsLead interpretation and classification of genomic variantsSupport development of laboratory systems, procedures and knowledge basesDrive quality, consistency and efficiency across testing servicesProvide expert guidance on complex cases and scientific challengesClinical ReportingAuthorise and oversee molecular genetics reporting processesAdvise clinicians regarding test selection, result interpretation and clinical implicationsAct as a senior escalation point for complex genomic findingsInnovation and Service DevelopmentLead validation and implementation of new technologies, assays and bioinformatics pipelinesDrive continuous improvement initiativesSupport research collaborations and innovation projectsIdentify opportunities to enhance diagnostic capability and patient outcomesLeadership and MentoringMentor scientists, registrars and laboratory staffFoster a culture of learning, collaboration and scientific excellenceSupport competency assessment and professional development programsContribute to succession planning and capability building across the team
About YouWe are seeking a recognised scientific leader with deep expertise in molecular genetics and genomic diagnostics.You will bring:A PhD (or equivalent) in molecular genetics, genomics, human genetics or a related discipline10+ years working extensively within an accredited diagnostic genomics laboratory, with demonstrated leadership responsibility and report authorisation experienceExperience authorising and interpreting molecular genetic reportsStrong expertise in variant classification frameworks including ACMG/AMP, ClinGen and related standardsDemonstrated leadership experience within a scientific or clinical laboratory environmentExperience with quality and accreditation frameworks including NATA, NPAAC and ISO 15189Outstanding communication and stakeholder management skillsMost importantly, you will be passionate about scientific excellence, mentoring others and improving patient outcomes through genomic medicine.
