About Us

Access Aged Care is seeking an experienced and highly respected medical leader to join us as Medical Director - Clinical Governance & Strategy.

This is a senior medical leadership role with the opportunity to influence clinical quality, governance, innovation and models of care across a growing national healthcare organisation.

Supporting more than 5,000 residents across approximately 120 residential aged care homes nationally, Access Aged Care delivers an integrated model of care incorporating General Practitioners, Nurse Practitioners, Geriatricians, Nurses and Allied Health professionals.

Our focus is simple: improving the quality of life and health outcomes of older Australians through timely access to high-quality, person-centred healthcare.

The opportunity

Reporting directly to the CEO, the Medical Director will serve as Access Aged Care's senior medical leader and principal medical advisor, providing executive clinical leadership, clinical governance oversight and strategic medical direction across the organisation.

Working closely with the CEO, Executive Team and Board, as well as the Practice Manager, Quality Manager and Clinical Leads, you will provide the medical leadership and assurance that underpins safe, high-quality and contemporary clinical care.

Importantly, this is not a day-to-day clinical operations role. It is an opportunity to provide senior medical oversight, strengthen our clinical governance framework and help shape the continued evolution of our clinical model.

What you will influence

As Medical Director, you will provide medical leadership across clinical quality, safety, risk and governance, including oversight of scope of practice, peer review and practitioner performance, and senior medical input into complex performance or disciplinary matters where required.

You will provide clinical governance oversight across critical domains including results follow-up, prescribing, recognition and management of deterioration, care transitions, telehealth safety, complaints and clinical incident closure.

You will also play a key role in:

• Providing medical oversight and endorsement of clinical policies, frameworks, pathways and standards.
• Providing senior medical oversight of significant clinical incidents, investigations and quality improvement initiatives.
• Strengthening clinical governance reporting and assurance to the Executive and Board.
• Guiding the development of future models of care, including virtual care, integrated aged care and hospital avoidance initiatives.
• Providing clinical governance input into the use of clinical data, digital systems, automation and AI, ensuring innovation is introduced safely and responsibly.
• Supporting the development of clinical leaders and strengthening clinical workforce capability.
• Representing Access Aged Care with professional colleges, regulators, industry bodies, government stakeholders and other sector partners.
• Contributing to Access Aged Care's broader clinical thought leadership and influence across the aged care and healthcare sectors.

About you

You will be an experienced General Practitioner, Geriatrician, Physician or equivalent specialist with significant clinical credibility and a strong understanding of clinical governance within complex healthcare environments.

You will bring current unrestricted AHPRA registration and an appropriate recognised specialist Fellowship, together with substantial post-fellowship clinical and leadership experience.

Ideally, you will have experience across areas such as clinical governance, incident review, clinical audit, quality improvement, credentialling, virtual care and multidisciplinary healthcare delivery.

You will be comfortable advising CEOs, Executive teams and Boards and equally capable of building trusted relationships with clinicians and operational leaders.

Most importantly, you will combine strong clinical judgement with strategic thinking and pragmatism. You will understand the difference between providing robust medical governance and becoming involved in day-to-day operations and will be comfortable providing constructive challenge when clinical quality or safety requires it.

The role is structured as a part-time employee engagement of approximately 2 days per week, with flexibility to evolve to more days as organisational requirements and strategic priorities develop.
