About the role
We are seeking an experienced Senior Legal Counsel to support a significant government reform program with national impact.
Please note applications close Wednesday 5 August 2026.
You will have an expertise in legislative design, statutory development and government processes to provide specialist legal support on a complex regulatory reform project. Working closely with legal, policy and subject matter experts, you will play a key role in translating policy into legislation and guiding reform through the legislative process.
This role is suited to a Senior Associate or Special Counsel level lawyer with demonstrated experience in legislative drafting, parliamentary processes and high-profile government reform initiatives.
Key ResponsibilitiesDevelop high-quality drafting instructions for the Office of Parliamentary Counsel (OPC).Review and analyse draft legislation to ensure legal accuracy and policy intent.Prepare explanatory memoranda, regulatory documents and supporting materials.Work closely with policy teams, legal advisers and subject matter experts to progress legislative reform.Support complex legislative, parliamentary and regulatory processes.Contribute to policy development to ensure legislative coherence and practical implementation.
About YouExtensive experience in legislative design and development.Proven expertise preparing drafting instructions for the Office of Parliamentary Counsel.Strong understanding of Commonwealth legislative and regulatory frameworks.Tertiary qualifications in Law and eligibility to practise in Australia.
