About the role
Changing clothes. Changing conventional wisdom. Change the world.
UNIQLO stems from the words 'unique' and 'clothing' – simple and clever, just like our clothes. Our philosophy is based on the premise of Life Wear: apparel that comes from the Japanese values of simplicity, quality and longevity. Life Wear is clothing that is constantly being innovated, bringing more warmth, more lightness, better design, and better comfort to people's lives.
As the leading brand of the Fast Retailing Group, UNIQLO continues to open large-scale stores in some of the world's most important cities and locations, as part of its ongoing efforts to solidify its status as a global brand. Today the company has more than 2,500 stores in 26 markets around the world.
Australia stands as a key market for UNIQLO in establishing its brand in the Asia and Oceania region and remains focused on continuing its growth. UNIQLO opened the first store, in Emporium, Melbourne, in April 2014, and as of today has expanded to 40 stores across Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, Western Australia, Queensland, and Australian Capital Territory.
The Opportunity
The Sustainability Specialist is responsible for planning and delivering UNIQLO Australia's sustainability and CSR events — from clothing recycling activations and NFP volunteer programs to community outreach and in-store campaigns. Working across Store and Store Support Centre (SSC) teams and partnering with local NFP organisations, this role brings UNIQLO's sustainability mission to life on the ground.
The Specialist also collaborates closely with cross-functional teams to ensure smooth delivery of initiatives. Reporting to the Senior Marketing Manager and Marketing Director, the Specialist also supports sustainability reporting to the Australian government and ensures compliance with local regulations.
Key Responsibilities
1. Strategy & Planning
Prepare, propose and manage the yearly Sustainability Department budget.
Own the sustainability activity calendar, adapting priorities in line with the business's evolving needs.
Partner with the global sustainability team and UQAU management to translate global sustainability/CSR initiatives into local execution, including the promotion of UNIQLO's sustainable product ranges across relevant channels.
Monitor local sustainability trends, legislation and regulatory developments to ensure UQAU remains compliant and identifies new opportunities.
Prepare and submit sustainability reports and analytics for internal, FR Group and external purposes, and track project performance against targets.
2. Campaigns & Community Partnerships
Plan, execute and coordinate sustainability and CSR campaigns and activations with internal and external stakeholders (including NFP organisations), aligned with the UNIQLO Australia business calendar.
Lead the coordination and delivery of UNIQLO Australia's clothing recycling and down recycling programs.
Manage community outreach events and NFP/charity partnerships to create meaningful volunteer opportunities for UQAU teams at both state and national levels.
Grow UNIQLO Australia's NFP partnership network by identifying and building new long-term collaborations aligned with our global sustainability mission, and act as the key external contact for partner communications.
Manage the UNIQLO Australia Sustainability Ambassador Program.
3. Communication & Internal Education
Lead sustainability storytelling and presentations at Store and EC touchpoints, in partnership with Instore Merchandising, Store Operations and related teams, to engage customers with UNIQLO's sustainability mission.
Work with the Design and Visual Merchandising teams to adapt global sustainability/CSR assets for digital and in-store executions.
Drive internal awareness and education on sustainability and CSR topics through internal communication channels.
Partner with FRMIC to integrate sustainability and CSR topics into employee training and development programs.
Act as the main point of contact and subject-matter resource for sustainability-related matters across local and global teams.
4. Cross-Functional Collaboration
Partner with Finance on budget tracking, government sustainability reporting, and financial compliance for CSR initiatives.
Partner with Legal on NFP partnership agreements, sponsorship contracts and regulatory compliance.
Partner with Human Resources on diversity and inclusion activities and internal engagement initiatives across store and head office.
Collaborate with Store Development on renewable energy procurement to meet global sustainability targets.
Support the Customer Care team with customer enquiries on UNIQLO Australia's sustainability/CSR activities.
Partner with Global Headquarter on global sustainability initiatives and strategic directions, while developing solutions to address Australia-specific challenges.
Experience & Qualifications
At least 5 years of relevant experience in sustainability, CSR, community engagement, event management or NFP partnerships, ideally within retail, FMCG or lifestyle brands.
Proven experience in project and event management — planning, budgeting, coordinating stakeholders and delivering end-to-end execution.
Solid understanding of Australian sustainability best practices and regulatory landscape (e.g. Modern Slavery Act, NGER, APCO, Seamless).
Communication & Stakeholder Management
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage a wide range of audiences — from executives and internal teams to NFP partners, customers and the general public.
Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills, with a diplomatic approach and the ability to build effective relationships across markets and functions.
Comfortable presenting to and collaborating with executive-level stakeholders locally and globally.
Ways of Working
Self-starter who can work autonomously, manage multiple priorities and deliver under tight timeframes.
Resilient and adaptable, comfortable in a fast-paced, ever-evolving environment.
Flexibility to work occasional weekends or after-hours to support event delivery and community activations, with substitute hours offered in return.
Willingness to travel interstate occasionally to support store activations, community events and NFP partnerships across Australia.
Experience working with culturally diverse teams and communities.
